I have bought a bottle of Wyeast Yeast Nutrient to put in with EC1118 on my plum wash. The quantities are clear 1/2 a tsp to 19 litres but I keep reading conflicting comments about when and what to add it to? Some say add it to the wash, some say add it to the hydrated yeast as a starter. What do you reckon? :-B

it would be too concentrated to add it all to the starter and the yeasties will cry :crying-blue:

I have had some of this sitting around for a long time - it says to add it to the boil when 15 mins out. Not sure what that's meant to do, but I keep forgetting to use it in my beers

Wyeast normally has the starter in yeast pack when you buy it.

The nutrient would be for wash. EC1118 loves a good feed and in warmer weather run real hard without off flavours.

That sounds more like a kettle finning.
Like Whirlfloc or Brewbrite. Helps flocculate break material so you can leave it in you kettle.

yeast nutrient and acid and sugar is needed to make yeast starter but at dilute rate .

In with the wash it goes then. Thanks fellahs.The instructions for boiling threw me too. I knew they were to do with brewing. Back to my plums I go ... :greetings-waveyellow:

It does say to add to the boil. It must have something that needs to be boiled in it to become soilable.

Thats what's kungfusing, the instructions and the Wyeast website info all refer to its use for brewing . For distilling I'll stick with adding it to the wash just prior to pitching in the hydrated yeast

That is exactly what I do with all of my beer ferments, the standard method. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I have brought some Vintners Harvest wine nutrient, on HBS advice :o

I enjoy end result from using ec1118 yeast, but find ferment very slow at least 4-5 wks

Am I just turbo charging the ec1118 by adding the DAP based wine nutrient, which might result in the need to filter taste out of final product?

Or am I just being 8-}

Gave my plums a second feed after 3 days. So far so fizzy.
