A box, a fan, 2 rare earth magnets...that's the basics, glue the magnets to the centre part of the fan and secure it in the box as close to the lid as you can, without it touching.

Optionals are a switch (mine is the power point ;-) ), and I used a fan speed controller and just always run it on minimum, otherwise the top speed of the fan would be too much.

I'd not given it a single thought before, love it when it's simple ^:)^

The case is an A B printer switch box. No one uses these any more. The lid we cut a 110mm hole in then covered it with a piece of plexi we had. This gave us a better result than just the original steel top cos that put us too close to the flask.
. Had a multi volt wall wart and run on 9 or 12 volts.
Switch from Jaycar. Magnets from old hard drive. We just broke one magnet in two for sizing reasons. We glued a large washer to the fan ( ex PC ) to move the magnets a little away from the fan motor. Stir bar is from a web brew shop.

Some experimentation was needed for the spacing of the magnets. Try it before gluing the magnets to make sure the polarity is right or the stir bar will fly off centre.

Yeah that's a good tip...I used a spot of Blu-Tac under the magnets for testing purposes...essentially, you will want them to be spaced the same distance apart as the two ends of the stir bar (well that's what worked for my setup anyway).

I ordered my fan and fan speed controller from Aus PC Market, if anyone is having trouble finding parts. And the box, I just got an ABB composite project box from Jaycar. Also got the magnets from Jaycar, and the stir bar from an online home brew shop also.

You can also use a potentiometer to control the speed apparently. I burned two up before finding I still had the multi volt purchased years ago. Start up on 12v, turn down to 9v for running. Should sound like a low hum. If it is tinkling it's probably too fast or out of balance somewhere.

Nice Job on the stirrer...love the AB switch case ...they used to make stuff so well in the good old days . :character-oldtimer:

BTW .Pots are not the best choice as you found. Yes they are adjustable resistors but they can't handle the current required to drive a Fan ...(or a 2400 watt element ) :)) .

Used in conjunction with semiconductor devices that can handle the current required ,they work .That's whats in the things that Brendan used in his......still ,an adjustable output plug pack was a nice work around :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Oh, our all up spend was $1.90 for the switch. The rest was lying around. (Found a switch later. Damn)
