safwhisky yeast

I brought a 100g of safwhisky yeast yesterday i plan on doing a 100l wash of mtn moonshines traditional mash i was goin to do a yeast starter but cant find much on it some yeast sites say to use a lme in the starter but how many grams of yeast and lme should i use for a 100l wash

Rehydration instructions
Rehydrate the yeast in 10 times its volume of water or wort.
Leave to rest for 15 minutes
Gently stir
Pitch in the fermentor

Recommended pitching rate
50 ‐ 80 g/Hl



I normally use the target wort, but if you did want to mix DME to make a wort, then the rule of thumb is 10% DME to water, so 100g DME per 1000ml (1L) water. (Not that you would need 1L for hydration)

I use this yeast regularly and I just cast it on the surface of the wort - leave it alone for a while (1/2 hr or so) (it generally sinks all by itself) - give a gentle stir and after maybe 4 to 6 hrs depending on temperatures you should see a mist of bubbles forming - it's away.....

I've had no failures so far doing this

Definately re hydrate this yeast... to not rehydrate will slow the ferment, raise the risk of infection and raise the chance of innoculation with wild yeast, with the value of grain and the cost of power and the yeast why when the maker recommends re hydration as does every university text would one not do it.

There are different ways to rehydrate different yeasts, the manufactures know best ;-)

I was just passing on my personal experience with this particular yeast over about thirty 40L batches.....

If you do follow the instructions be clear that the when they say
"Rehydrate the yeast in 10 times it’s volume of sterile water or wort"
they mean 'sterile water' or 'sterile wort' not just a smaller amount of wort

So boiled and cooled tap water or wort is the go - not distilled or demineralised water

I have just ordered a 500g block myself. I'm curious to know how much everyone is using of this per 25 or 50L wash size?

In a 60L wash I use 6 teaspoons and make a starter, probably overkill but I know it will ferment and a 500g block takes a while to chew through :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I plan on doin a starter for mtn moonshines mash how long should u leave to grow a starter before it goes in and how much grain to make the wort

I tried rehydrating this arvo i put down 100l of tpw in 4 fermenters and rehydrated the yeast for all of them and was very happy with the results a much faster take off ill be doin that again for sure
