First time using Fermex Yeast

Postby TasSpirits » Wed Oct 21, 2015 2:00 pm

Found some Fermex, did a bit of research, found out it should work. Arrived today so I thought I would put down a trail batch with what I had about the place.

2.2kg raw sugar
2 cups light malt extract powder
6 wheat bix
topped up to 13L

sg 1.060 uncorrected

pitched 25gm yeast into a 300ml starter on the stir plate @ 28'

within 12 mins running to the shed to dump in the fermenter before it poured out everywhere.

almost made it :))

this pic was taken at 10 mins

the YouTube video i learned to re-hydrate yeast on told me to go for a wider bowel rather than tall to avoid this :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Ive never had one take off like this, this yeast has been kept in cold storage from day 1, I think this is what is making a difference. My wash is bubbling away nicely now, virtually no lag time. :-D
I will certainly find a new vessel for the next time I use this.

Is that the same yeast they use in Lowans or something else? I also get 10 min lag times with Lowans if the temp is 30 or over.

I believe it's the same, this yeast has been handled a bit better I recon, and a f$&ck load cheaper, never had lowans work so well. Got home from work 4 hours later, maybe 240 bubbles per minute. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Nice. Yeah the extra middle man (lowans) probably has some impact on the final quality.
