Turns out some tradelink stores do sell it its called w.i.s 801 on their computer system and they could check other stores stock. The local didnt have it but a 20m drive too another one that did. Hope that helps anyone looking. Beenleigh tradelink has 7 for anyone that cares.

yeah its a pain , 90% prep 10% work.... has to be clean , like cleaned with acid/vinegar , dont be scarce on flux , and as much heat as possible. If you got it on concrete or a steel bench that also conducts the heat away fast. making it harder...

Its done used alot more solder than I thought it would. Joint(s) seem strong, first time it twisted off second time its holding strong.

Just going to chime in here mate,

If you throw too much heat at soft solder copper to SS your going to end up in misery, slow n steady with a low flame is the only way ;-)

yeah , i think it relates to what your using as a heat source , for example i use butane and commercial solder station,,,, where as you can easily over temp if your using map or oxy acetylene.

:violence-smack: i keep forgetting minor details lol

I had success the first time I tried soldering copper to SS using just the regular bernzo flux. I first gave the stainless a good sand with some wet and dry sandpaper then painted it with a coat of hydrocloric acid then the flux...slow and steady heat...it worked just fine.

Bernzo flux success again. This time, a 1" x 3" long ferrule to Cu reducer on my parrot.

Super clean staino and a good dollop of bernzo flux. I only used about 1.5" of solder in this join. Could barely hear the 'hiss' of the torch, the flame was that low. Will clean up better that the Cu-Cu join below it. ;-)

$20 butane torch and a little patience. Like Mac said, fuck all flame and she's apples. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Happy days.

Gettin there Mac. I have a few shotgun-shaped copper bits here but i've have been flat out with this 'moving interstate' shite. :handgestures-thumbdown:

reflux cooling is sorted, still need to drill and solder the shotgun for product cooling. Then its just insulation and she's ready to do a cleaning run.

I shall be starting a build thread soonish. Till then, here's a lil' taste tester. :D

Hey McStill, the $20 torch you use for soldering S/S to copper, is it propane or butane :?:
I've got some 4" S/S to copper soldering to do & don't want to fuck it up.

Cheers :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Those Benzomatic are good and readily available from any Bunnings store but I have shyed away from these in favour of the small lpg torch you can buy with a heap of extra tips for heating $130 plus your lpg. The main thing to me was the cost of the refill bottle compared to a 9kg lpg refill. I am not saying these are no good, quite the opposite...but it gets expensive for refills where a larger lpg bottle will last for a long time...imo

Went to bunnings today & brought the cheap Bernzo torch.
I love the control this little burner has, I successfully soldererd a 4" s/s ferrule to copper,
nice penetration of the solder through the whole joint :happy-partydance:

Thanks Mac for the no bullshit how to on s/s to copper soldering ^:)^

Finally had some time to have another crack at making my own parrot with soft solder.

Had the parts in my shed for the last 6 months.

Finally bought a Benzomatic propane burner. Took a few joins to get it right and reading this thread again, but I reckon I fuckin got it now!

This one is a bit fugly at the moment but I will take it to work and give it a clean up and see how it looks.

Thought I would show the pic for a laugh :teasing-tease:

And before anyone says it the output will be bent and cut to where I want it later. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Funnily enough it was when I was able to sit down and have a drink and relax that I had the patience it took to do it :handgestures-thumbupleft:
