My brother picked up the flaked maize from Mandurah Stock & Feed. It's not as good as using the stuff that looks like mini corn flakes but hell cheaper. We called the manufacturer to find a distributor near us, no idea if it's sold over east.

It is steamed but it doesn't gelatinise straight away like the corn flake stuff, I just boil up 80ltrs in my kettle then pour it in my ferment and wrap it up for 24hrs. By the next night it's still around 60 deg and one hell of a gelatinised lump.

Top up with some more boiling water and add enzyme and malted grains.

I'm buying a 3 roller grain mill and think it would really help the conversion rates by running it through the mill before putting it in the ferment. There's always an improvement out there somewhere.

I grind whole corn not cracked to a fine flour, it still does that about 50kg per hr. Doesn’t seem to heat the grain at all :handgestures-thumbupleft:

The grinder looks like a good investment with the heating up i put some grain through a old coffee grinder and the machine was getting warm after 5 kg of grain the machine you have may have some cooling to keep temperate down.

No, uj is a sugar head that uses corn just for flavor, AG is all grain, where either malted grain or enzymes convert the starch in the grain to sugar for the yeast to use

Double boiler would be a good solution if you can afford it.

Wish I could find a cheap supplier like that in Brisbane- If anyone finds one, let me know!

bluc wrote:I did 3 mashs ground cracked corn rice hulls and sparged it. If you look at corn mash number 3 in my thread will give you a good rice rulls ratio. Spend a couple minutes mixing hulls and corn and it will sparge like barley.. :handgestures-thumbupleft: mind you I have not tried flaked corn, but the cracked corn was about 3/4's way to flour... flaked corn is on my radar for this year so I can skip gelatinization. Now I know you can get it at feed stores :happy-partydance:

Ah, there you go mate. Cracked corn and rice hulls obviously ok as you've done it :handgestures-thumbupleft: . Flaked, now that's another thing and what I was alluding to!

Any updates from people who had success filtering or using flaked maize and rice hulls?
