You are not going to blow anything up during use.
All the accidents happen when bottles leak in an enclosed space and you dont realize before trying to ignite the torch.
1.5m length is fine, your not trying to solder at shoulder height, 9.5kg bottles are about 400mm high to start with so technically you should be able to reach anything you need on the workbench, if not move the work closer or sit the bottle on a stable elevated surface.
Not on the bench tho as you may inadvertently heat the bottle which is a no-no.

If you are really worried get a gas safety fuse and a flashback arrestor.
