Make Your Own Pipe Branch Templates

This is a handy skill to know and easy to do. Hopefully I can make it look as easy as it is. I am making here a 3" to 4" branch.
For the purpose of this post I am just making a paper template, but you can make a template with any suitable material. Plastics, cardboard or thin steel sheet are great because you can keep them for future use.
To start you will need a piece of A3 or bigger size paper. I have used a piece of butchers paper here On this you need a line through the center and a line square to this down the bottom.

On your centre line, draw two circles.

The top circle is 4" and the bottom cicle is 3". Place a line square to centre through your branch circle. With your compass set at the same radius as your branch circle (1.5")
bisect your cicle like this.

Then place lines parallel to the centre line through these points.

Halfway already.
Now, the diameter of 3" is 76.2mm. Times this by 3.1416 =239.4mm. Note that you need to take into account the thickness of your template material. ie 1mm thick cardboard will make the diameter 77.2mm. Divide your circumference by 12=19.95mm.
Measure this out along your bottom line like this. I use a calculator and cumulatively add from centre. Then number your points as shown.

Pick up yr trusty compass and transpose heights from the top part to the bottom part.

Follow the series of numbers.

And you will end up with this

Best thing for the next bit is another set of hands and a flexible steel rule. Ore you can use fencing wire

Just follow the flow and it'll come out how you need.

Hey bushy!
when making the circles do you need to make them to the OD of the tubing? I know its been said that aussi pipe is smaller than American pipe (insert tasteless joke here :teasing-neener: ) we go by ID, ie 4" is 4 1/8" OD

Hey Tickle,

Yeah and we go by the OD for sizes. But metaphorically you only beat us by the skin of our dicks. Which isn't much
Back on topic though, yes you use the outside diameter for the sizes. Don't forget to take into account the thickness of your template material or you will come up short.
