copper porn with questions.

Postby jasonc2861 » Mon Jul 22, 2013 3:57 pm

had the best day, went shopping, salvage yard, scord 50mm round by 160 cm long bit of copper pipe,25$.
1 x gas torch 26$
1x some solder and flux 25$
1x hacksaw plus spare blade 12$ all up at bunnings
2x copper fittings 10$ from trade link.
1 six pack craft girlyman beer 15$ plus bottle of double stout 6.50$.
now my question is before I go butchering (im a butcher by trade)this lovely copper up,
I want to add another half meter to my pure distill reflux still and was wondering will this fitting work?
im going to take off the join at the bottom of the reflux, join another bit to it with the copper fitting bit, then solder the screw bit to the new part,,,voila!!remembering I have 10 thumbs, hanging to have a go but am a bit nervous to say the least. tips please!!!!!!!! :D

Hey mate, that should work just fine, provided it's the right size of course.

Before you start soldering, take a read here:
http://www.aussiedistiller.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=2931

You want to be heating about an inch away from the join. Be particularly careful never to directly point the flame at that bernzo flux, it burns really easily. For that brass fitting, I'd heat around the pipe about 80% of the time, and on the brass fitting (right at the end) the other 20%. Similarly with the copper joiner.

Have fun burning and butchering

I love your enthusiasm. I think I have the same still and also made an extension. I took the difficult path I guess and got another brass union to screw the still into. In the future I think I will take out the brass, ezy flange the bottom of the still and make an extension piece with a flange at each end.

lol... u a 2-pot screamer mate?? :laughing-rolling:

Nice still though, top work. With the solder leaks, hit 'em with flux and heat it until the solder pools together. Piece a piss. :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:
