Best type of solder and flux to use?

Postby tenorbrew » Wed Oct 14, 2015 8:27 am

Hi Folks,

About to build my first pot still and am wondering if there is a optimum lead free solder (and flux), in terms of safety in the distilling. Any brands I should avoid? Is Sn97Cu3 ok?

I'm guessing "lead free" doesn't necessarily mean safe to distill with and drink.

Thanks,

tenorbrew

Bunnings Aquasafe and Bakers flux work fine in the plumbing section with the copper. Will say lead free.

Dont know why the photo is Sn60Pb40 it is most def lead free the photo must just be a place holder.

Aquasafe is a bit pricey from bunnings as they just upped their price to $41ish, there were rumors that plumbing supply places might stock it for less.
Bakers is about $10 and works well.

Also just found:
http://www.bromicplumbing.com.au/soldering-welding/accessories/bromic-plumb-safe-lead-free-solder-wire-spool-250g.html
Made by the same company as bernzomatic so could be good.
Its only 1% copper so "tin-pest" could be an issue but i dont know fo sure either way.

Its a but cheaper but at this point untested for our application.

This is the only place I can find that stuff for sale other than Masters was

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BROMIC-PLUMB ... 419d3527e8

Note both Masters and this listing are only the 500g rolls

Im of the opinion that a Bunnings exec is a member here. :)) We all talk so much about getting this and that from Bunnings for our stilling hardware and then the price goes up............

Cheers Phil

Pretty sure they just use a stock photo for all the varieties of solder on the website, even if it's for lead free
I've def seen the aquasafe in bunnings and it doesn't have lead

Yeah Ive seen the same too. They stock solder in a couple of different areas of the store. Get the aquasafe from the plumbing department. I even had to show one worker the aquasafe on the Bunnings external website before he was able to locate it on his in-store catalogue.
