100L Stainless Boiler

Postby Citris » Mon Jul 09, 2012 1:10 pm

Hello again...

I was not sure where to put this, and I guess its still a beginner question :?

I am going to try and build a new boiler, using a 100L (98L) Stainless Stock Pot (around the $200 mark) and some custom elements from Romar (I noticed law-of-ohms used these and had good results). I was thinking 2x 2000w and 1x 1000w, and wiring them up, and using an MCU to control them based on temperature. Only thing I figured is, 5000w is about 20a at 240v, and apparently most houses are caped at 16a, but I think I have 2 phases in my house, so hopefully that's not an issue.

The only thing I really want to know is, has anyone tried this, or something similar? I will only be boiling 75L at a time, not the full 100L, is 5000w overkill really? I know a few of you guys use old Kegs, but I would really like to be able to remove the lid, use it for other applications.

Let me hear what you guys think.

You would need a custom circuit to do 5000W,

Standard wiring will in theory allow 20A. (4800W)

I use my Romar 3600W element in my 50L keg still.

I use a three ring burner with a very high power regulator for my 90L stripping still. ( I put 75L in it)

My boiler was an old LPG gas tank! lol and yes I did clean it with caustic soda before using it. Was $30 off eBay.

Looking at the fuse box, breakers are 16a, three of me, guessing one for the lights, one up and one down, Usully they are modula, or in phases, what ever, I have wired up my own power points before, not an issue, I have never added new breakers/phases yet. Gonna have to get a mate to do that.

As it is tho, I have 2 separate circuits, up and down stairs, both with 16A so I can run the 5000w. I just prefer electric, seems safer when dealing with flammable vapor...

I'm thinking about taking your advise Law-Of-Ohms, Getting a Burner and using the BBQ Gas bottles. Only thing I need to be cautious about is, well alcohol is flamable. How do you guys protect against things spitting out and causing fires ect? I am using a SS Pot, so I can probably seal the lid with some silicon ect... then pop rivet some latches on. I'm no newbie when it comes to setting my house on fire, I'm sure the misses will be really happy to know I have done it again :laughing-rolling:

How long does the 3 ring burner take to brink your wash up to boil? I was looking at the cheaper 3 ring burners, and possible the Rambo Burner (Jet Engine :laughing-rolling:)

Think I need to refill my Fire extinguisher again :teasing-tease:

Was looking at the DIY burner... then I saw the Rambo Burner, then... I saw this...

Anyone tried something this extreme?

I justgot one of these little rippas,
they're set up for LPG but if you want to go NG, you will need to buy different jets. He sells them for 40 cents each :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Not sure,
it depends on a few things like insulation etc.
mine for example:
NG, 50L of Water, in a brick cupboard took 1Hr 15mins from flame on to 90 deg.

your results may vary ;-)

I heard the Rambo ones could bring an 88L mash to the boil in 25-30 mins... But their price is double. But $70 is such a good price.

Thats terrible, you need to insulate your boiler to bring heat up times down a bit...... :snooty:

50L in about 40 min for a good bought burner with hp reg is what I have seen then of course you can get a big don 747 that will heat approximately a million times quicker!

But then again big don has been going through some changes lately........
