As per title... if you run gas, share your rigs with pics please...

I had initially set up for electric heating, mainly because it was something I understood, now though, barring a re-wire (which I can do if I can find a minute or 2) running gas is really what I need to be doing. Major stumbling block is that after having a look around regulators aint regulators and burners the same. If a few kind folk could share pics of their gas heating rigs: brands, point of purchase and even regulator specifics if possible, it would all be extremely helpful. If while sharing pics you can also explain anything learned from experience such as extra control gear, extra lengths of hosing, specialist hosing, even fire fighting gear for emergency...

For me, and hopfully anyone that reads this thread, nothing is gospel... Im no fool, though know that I need to understand more about what can possibly use to achieve my goal, and gas isnt something I intend to learn by trial and error.

firstly good for you re if using gas = pay LOTS of attention re risk management :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I sit my potstill/50l ss keg boiler on a welded box metal 'stand' with the entire keg sheathed by a 44gal barrel. Theres a post/pic here under insulating, potstill subforum.
I use a 3 ring, cast iron LPG 'banjo'-type burner with a 1800mm gas hose (both bought at BCF for about $60). I use a portable LPG cylinder with a regulator that has been manually 'opened'/adjusted so that, for strip runs' anyway, I can get a decent flame going.
The cylinder typically is as far away from the 'engine room' as my distillate takeoff (ie close to 1800mm from the burner)
and....I ALWAYS put my mutlifunction fire extinguisher next to the spare collection jars before I start a run. ;-)

So.....3 ring burner and extralong gasline = $60. Cutup 44 gal drum as heat/safety sheath = free. Extra long liebig/takeoff on potstill (mute point as the material length was that long to start with so it would have needed cutting otherwise). Fire extinguisher + should have one anyway IMHO.

The shed floor is cleaned of any debris before commencing a run and I am VERY particular about ventilation vs breezes etc whislt distilling.
(and thank you to SBB and Stubbydrainer whom, from Day 1, gave me a clear insight into the safety aspects to consider etc)

I have a cast iron 3-ring burner which I got from an army surplus store. To get the extra grunt and control I purchased a MP adjustable regulator and a SS braided gas line.

I've got a heap of the old style solid bricks. 2 bricks are used to support the burner and then a number around the burner but 2 high to support the keg and provide some shielding to the flame.

My still sits on a car rim stand which houses the banjo. All of that sits on a metal trolley so I can push it around the place. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thankyou all... both links and information are greatly appreciated, especially if you have already posted elsewhere... It makes it much easier to have it all in one place rather than collate information from all over the site, and also have links to where the materials can be procured from...

Birtha runs a 3 ring burner from Bunnings,

0-400kpa adjustable regulator (controls heat flame great!) got of eBay for ~$15 from UK!

45KG LPG gas bottle I refill with gas from the servo! 50c L, 9kg bottle = ~18L = $9 to fill, 45kg = $45 to fill (but cant fill all the way as it doesn't have a bleed valve like the 9kg's have)

I use an old car LPG tank to fill and then decant @ home.

I use an Italian spiral burner from beerbelly with a reg from eBay from the states. Pain in the arse as had to change fittings.

Bent up some ally for a wind break. Find it works best when you put a brick under each leg to give a bit more height.

Also if using something that throws the heat out watch out for exploding concrete! Had it happen once and sated the shit out of me. Now I put the burner down on a fireproof base.

The hp reg is good for stripping but too much for spirit runs. I need to put my adjustable reg in, and stubbydrainer showed me how to get it in line the other day :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Got mine from mcstill, it's a boiler element, looks fuck all but crank it up and it sounds like a fuckin plane!

Hey crow, with your setup, have you got lefthand thread from your gauge to a righthand thread hose?. If so, where did you get that fitting?. Ive got a lefthand thread hose and cant find a fitting to go onto the 3 ring burner.

I currently use the Italian Spiral Burner with a high pressure regulator.
I got the longest flexible gas pipe I could get so as to keep the 9kg Gas Bottle (filled for $20) outside the shed.

I have one fire extinguisher inside the shed and another one outside the shed.
The shed has a wooden floor; I laid down some bricks, put a piece of cement sheet on top and then a 3mm thick sheet of mild steel.
Gives me a 1m x 2m platform for the still.
The sheet sheet doesn't even get warn - my shed floor is safe.

Was looking at wok burners on alibab the other day jdonly1, they look great, big $ though :shock: , yours looks like a bloody flame thrower! :)) awesome. That looks deadly home_brewer!, 4 legs is very unstable compaired to 3 legs, i can see in that pic the legs are out of line. Have you got it attached at the top some how?.

hi guys , stripping with a 2'' potstill with a liebig condenser , 50l keg boiler with a 38,000 btu burner , one of the 3 ring ones from BCF camping shop since my 2200w element blew the other day iv been making do with this setup however im struggling to get a decent amount collected compared with my electric setup , same wash im using . am i under/over powered ? , any input would be appreciated cheers
