Welding Keg - Back Purge? + Tap question

Postby guerd87 » Wed Jul 31, 2013 7:05 am

Just a quick question on welding a SS keg, done a search around but couldnt find my answer.

When welding, does anyone back purge the keg itself with Argon or is it not needed?

While im asking, anyone have any recommendations for a weldless drain tap? Something suitable from bunnings/plumbing shop? Brass, steel, Stainless?

Cheers,
John

Skin fittings are perfect for mounting on the flat spot on the bottom of a keg. You can get them from whitworths here: https://www.whitworths.com.au/main_item ... lutePage=1 or you can find them on ebay. Mac can supply a 3/4 silicone seal for it.

If you don't purge you will get oxidisation ,looks like little balls of cauliflower in stainless
It leaves a surface that can't be cleaned properly, and will lead to corrosion
If you can get to it ,you can flap disk it off, and this is nearly exceptable

Thanks for all the replies.

I will make sure the keg is purged then when they are welding the legs on and fill port :)

I don't have a whitworths here in town. I will have a look around at the local plumbing shops first for something the same. If not I will order one.

Cheers,
John

Most boating stores should stock skin fittings. Probably with a look if you have any around you.
