Electric boiler use

Postby bt1 » Fri Sep 20, 2013 6:33 am

hello all,

keep seeing these electric boilers 50lt and 100lt going out but no ones provided a work practice for em.

Just say for example does anyone turn on low heat the night before so it's coffee, toast, ciggy and get straight into a run first thing next day?

Reckon the heat up time saving could just about enough of a reason to change to electric for mine.

My 50Lt boiler takes around an hour to boil up. used to be 2 hours when I only had one 2400w element and no insulation. I wouldn't leave it unattended overnight even if it took that long to boil.

I had considered it bt, it would be easy enough to do. A thermostat at say 65oC and your done. It only takes 30mins or so for my boiler to get to temp, so its not really worth it for me. If I upgrade to a 100L boiler I will seriously consider it.
I guess you would want to have fail safes in place. You dont want a shed full of ethanol vapour.

I think insulation is the key for electric boilers. It cut's boil up time and I don't need to use as much power during a run.

Since going from gas to electricity I've dramatically cut down my boil times with a 50lt keg.
Could be because I'm inside a shed now, but I get to a boil in 45 minutes with 2 elements going. Out in the wind with a 3 ring burner it has taken me over 2hrs :handgestures-thumbdown:

Inside makes a difference.
My boil up time using a 3 ring burner under a 50ltr keg is just under an hour.

I'm sure it would be better if I ramped up to a 4 ring.

Yep Bt1 I did have a a 50 litre keg boiler.

I normally put an electric blanket around mine the night before and put it on level 3. That seems to get it going up to around 25 to 30 degrees.

I also insulate my boiler and run 2 2400 watt elements. Heat up time is about 35 to 40 minutes.

I do have a new 100 litre boiler. Haven't run that yet (that's this weekend) it has 1 3600 watt and 1 2400 watt. I haven't got insulation for this yet but will let you know how long it takes to warm up and get going :handgestures-thumbupleft:

thanks guys,

yeh Dom got this vision of a 200lt + boiler on a gentle warm up over night, then attach the beast and ramp up power straight into a run with no delays.

if I'm goin bigger to suit a 115mm glass bubbler seems to be a good fit.
