So have been offered a few free 44 gallon drums, still sussing them out as to thickness etc. I am aware that they were used to store industrial radiator coolant. Could these be sufficiently cleaned to use as a boiler, or should I avoid them?

They are very heavy duty by the look of it, but I've checked supply of similar heavy duty stainless drums and you can get them brand new and shipped to Tasmania for around $1200, so that price looks way over the top to me.
These guys are selling NEW SS drums for $385, if you want removable lids they come with the SS316 drum but cost an extra $100.
