boiler build has started

Hi guys. Am about to start my boiler build. Have already got my 2400w elements, 3" fsd sgk for my fill port ( thanks mac :handgestures-thumbupleft: ) have a feww questions that I know you guys can answer :D . When placing the fill port is it best to sit the 3" flange fush to the keg top and make the hole just under sized so the fill port doesn't go through. My next question is the big one :-B . I have borrowed my brother inlaws mig welder. I have some confidence inusing it with some practice but the wire in it is mild steel and I know that I will run into oxidation issues. If I pickle the weld after it is done and apply a non oxidation paint will this be ok? I know the concern is oxidation on the inside of the keg but if I set the mig welder to only have small penetration will this work. Just at a cross road as to what I should do. I know ss is best but can't affored to fork out the $$ for ss wire and the quotes I got for a welder :scared-eek:

I've honestly never tried to weld stainless with steel mig wire so can't really answer that one. It definitly will rust and contaminate the SS keg. I welded mine with stick but it really was a fine line. I wouldn't recommend that for someone learning to weld. I cut my holes a little smaller than inside id purely because the extra material there helps to stop blowing through. Then die ground the Id back flush. Ill take some pics and try upload them.

Sorry to tell ya bud, but carbon steel wire on staino is a no no
It will rust and paint won't help as the different metals will also get electrolysis

Ordinary carbon wire will weld it up however it will have none of the properties desired...it will rust...etc...etc. Only use S/S wire,filler rod or electrodes for welding S/S and dont forget the passify the welds post welding.

Thanks lads for the advise. Mild steel it isnt. Is that wire from bunnings gasless? Maybe a bit more r&r with local welders!!

Regarding your first question.

When placing the fill port is it best to sit the 3" flange fush to the keg top and make the hole just under sized so the fill port doesn't go through.

You can do it either way but aesthetically for a fill port I would go through hole as it looks better and there is no load on the weld, but if it were the still mount i would make the whole undersized by a mm or 2 and put the port ontop of the hole,that way it is easier to align and will have a good strong base for the still. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I got mine welded at thelace where I get all my beekeeping gear, they are a full service welding it fit to make all the extractors and boilers and stuff associated with bees.

If this is in the wrong place or not allowed please delete mods,
Quality beekeeping supplies at jijaw st sumners park, look them up on the web and if you want ton know what I got done and how much then message me, but would think you could get all of that done for less than $200. I got three 2" ferrules and a 6" ferrule welded on for less than $200

Good blokes to, just so you know I have no association apart from being a client

Ok guys giving this a little more thought how bout this for an option. Could I use aquasafe solder and bakers flux to do the job? Not sure if it can be done have seen a few articles that you can solder ss together :-B

Nah mate. You need to weld all yr boiler joins. IMHO.
Silver may do the job but why go half arsed.

I agree, your boiler is the one piece of gear that can stay with you through out your journey in distilling, so my advice is do it once and do it right. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
