Boiler questions

Postby sp0rk » Thu Jun 26, 2014 1:36 pm

Hi lads,
After changing my mind a few times now on whether I'll go gas or electric for my boiler, my sparkie mate has informed me there is ample room spare on the sub board in my garage to run a 20A circuit out to my shed (Landlord has already said I can do whatever I want as long as I fund it)
We're going to wire up a breaker box with 2 x 10A phases, 1 x 15A and 1 x 20A, All switchable so only one of each (except for the 2 x 10's) are usable at once, just for safety
Just wondering since I have the power available, should I still run 2 x 2400W elements, or would 1 x 3600W element be a better choice?
At the moment I'll just be running a pot still, but I intend on building a 3" Boka later down the track or possibly a 4" Bubbler if finances improve
Anyone else running a single 3600W element in their boiler or any opinions between the 2?

Personally I would go 3600W and 2400W, use both for heat up, switch off 3600 and have a controller for the 2400 once up to temp :handgestures-thumbupleft:

As for whether gas or leccy is better it's really personal choice. I have ran both. Gas is good for ambient heating for winter evening runs electric is good for no noise and minimal heat loss.

Of course there are safety issues that affect both setups but in the end it's your choice

20A isn't enough for a 3600W and a 2400W...

Gday sp0rk, i run a 3600W and a 2400W in my boiler. I control the 3600W with a controller and just use the 2400W for start up :handgestures-thumbupleft:

You can run the 2400W off your 10A circuit and the 3600W off your 15A or 20A circuit...

There's only 20A coming to the breaker, which will branch into the other circuits so only 20A total will be usable at once
4800W total is my max usable wattage
I guess 2 x 2400W might be the best choice

Yes, and more than enough to run a shit hot keg boiler for a 4" rig...... you'll be boiling under 45 - 50 minutes & dropping one element way back to nearly zero for most of the run unless you're stripping at 4800w :handgestures-thumbupleft: :happy-partydance:

Awesome, looks like I'll be placing an order for 2 x 2400W with you when the tax return comes through :D

Another upside is if you move you can still use the 24's on separate circuits. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

That is very true
Hopefully next move will be into a house we'll buy, but you never know
