Preference or Difference in Keg Types 50L

Postby Ohms » Tue Mar 03, 2015 3:19 pm

Hi All,

I have access to both common sizes of kegs, the CUB's and the taller ones - is there any difference to which i should use as a boiler? Initially still head will be going straight onto the standard keg fitting so wondered if 1 was better than the other for that purpose.

Thanks guys

The standard keg would be the way to go

as it is more steady and less likely to tip over (lower center of gravity)

and you will save room on height of total rig. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I also found having a lower boiler to be a greater benefit than lower volume under the element. I only run full 35-40L washes, so am never at risk of going below the element (where the taller kegs allow for less volume at height of the element).

Especially when running in full height for vodka etc., that little height difference is a big saviour for me :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Just to add another side and only if it's in the budget, I purchased a brand new keg for about $180 and I reckon it's great value eg, no beer compnay can take it off you :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Short and fat is also better if your running gas, bigger surface area on the bottom and better heat transfer.

Thanks for all the replies guys, went and picked up a shorty this morning off a mate - the thing is not far off new either so happy days. Also scored a 700mm bit of 4 inch copper for 20 bucks so i know where im going with the build - 4" x 4 plate single 50mm cap pyrex glasser blockhead, 3" off the block into a 2"shotty. All those nice builds in the bubbler sub are inspiring. Will post a build thread up when i get a few more bits and bobs and start the build proper.

Good stuff mate and don't forget we love the pics, a nicely documented build thread with progression pics is a real winner around here. Good luck. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
