Zak's 'Fat Boy' Boiler

This is the keg that I'm going to turn into the boiler for Agrajag;

Keg.JPG

I've got a 6" still port, 3" SSG fill port and 2x elements (so 2x 2" ferrules down the bottom somewhere)

I need to work out some legs (don't have to be very tall) and a drain (probably 1")

What I want is pics of your 18gal keg boilers, or your ideas for mine!

What do I do with the 2" hole in the side? I want to keep the keg standing up, not laying down like DBV's boiler.

Hey Zak
Maybe weld a small piece of stainless inside the hole in the side.
Keeping it as low as possible - rather than looking like a patch.
Being a double skin it is a pain to do much else with it.

The hole in the bottom will have a tube attached on the inside.

Are you going with the 2" drain and 6" ferrule for the column?
It's going to be difficult to put a filler port into the top of the keg.

The legs on Woodduck's boiler are the go.. Look great and keep everything steady.

Keep us posted as no one else has done one of these yet.

Just thinking about the idea of using legs on the boiler like Woodduck's.
Why not weld them up at the half way mark and cover the hole in the side of the keg with one of the legs?
That is after it has a patch or whatever welded over it.

It will look a lot neater.
That leg can be the one at the back so the bulge in the kegs side (double skin) will be less visible as well.

Just a thought.

Cheers DBV

I've got a little bit of 3" stainless pipe, I plan on keeping the fill port vertical, in front of the still port... Probably run it up from the widest point of the keg. Hard to explain without a pic.

I'm also going to use the end of the keg with the threaded hole in it as the top, so I'll be cutting that hole out anyway :handgestures-thumbupleft:

And I'm going to insulate the boiler, so I'm not toooo fussed about aesthetics :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'd thought of using the 2" hole in the middle of the keg as a fill port.
Didn't suggest it as it may not appeal to everyone - being at the half way mark.
Didn't realise you were insulating - will make the fill port stick out less.

Maybe insulate and put timber around it, like a cask.

All good.

Just have to wait on the photos now..... :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hey zak I've been doing some thinking and recon i have an idea for some legs, one's that are better than mine, well maybe.

I had no idea what or who agrajag was till last night when i googled it and found he was a pretty unlucky bugger :laughing-rolling: anyway i see that one of his reincarnations was a bat like critter so i made up a small scale model of an idea i had.

Now i understand this idea won't be for everyone and is a bit out there and I'm not sure on what sort of stuff your into zak but I've wanted to try a bit copper art/forming for a while and thought what the hell.

I have only done one side just to give a bit of an idea, i recon I'll make the other wing and leg later and put on a ss cup or something. The only thing is there will still need to be some sort of leg at the back, ss pipe i guess. The rest can be bolted/screwed to tabs/pipes that are welded to the keg. You could still insulate the keg cause if anything it will add to the apperence. Right enough crapping on heres my idea.

The Agrajag bat-thingy boiler.

LEGS.

That is still something I need to sort out for my boiler, have to get it off the bricks, not safe at all.

Zak,

I'm currently building a boiler exactly the same as yours except a 4" still mount.
Was also thinking what to do with the 2" bung hole...Im going to weld a low profile triclover into it and fit a dial thermometer to know when wash temp is nearly ready.

Happy building :-)

Don't be shy with pics mate!

I was thinking about a thermoport there, but the insulation is going to cover it up :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Two short legs at the front with toes and 2 long 2pice legs at the back?

Simple and rough... I'd probly use the 6in cutout to patch the hole and hide it at the back. Mine sits in a corner anyways.

Only photo worthy thing so far is my unchanged 18 gallon keg....
I'm yet to start my build, hope to get the goodies next week :happy-partydance:

Well I talked to Mac last night, and he reckons 80L is about the minimum you want for a 6" still... Soooooo

I'm going to cut this keg under the middle ring, and my other 18gal keg above the middle ring, and glue them together for a total volume of aboooout 120L :happy-partydance:

Yesterday I swapped one of my kegs for one that had already had the top cut off :handgestures-thumbupleft: saves me cutting up 2 good kegs...

Then I cut the bottom off of mine, just below the center ring. A bit of hammer work and I now have a ~110L boiler!

Now I've gotta cut the holes for the still port and SSG fill port. The fill port will take a bit of work, I need to extend the ferrule to make up for the shape of the top of the keg.
