Metals tends to evapourate if left alone too long.
Shiny stuff faster than dull stuff, copper tends to vaporize the fastest.

My guess is short lengths left over from bigger jobs that would have just gone to scrap anyway.

Big industry also provides as much free molasses and sugar as I need, not a lot of white sugar though but every grade of brown and raw. As long as the bosses know what your doing they don't mind. All the SS is not so much scrap but stuff that's laying about, just a quick question and usually can take it no worries.
