Hey All,
I am currently doing a single malt wash using the following,

4kg Smoked Barley Malt
6kg Dextrose
130gm Bakers Yeast
100gm Whisky Chips
a few drops of peat smoke.

After only 4 days, It smells like a 12yr old at the moment. Will be putting it through my still and keep you all updated on the progress. Its really strong too.

Dave

The SS Vodka is in MHO very good with a well cut neutral TPW wash. I also enjoyed the SS Single Malt Whisky with a dash of water, if you closed your eyes you would believe you where in the Highlands. Although to be honest I am not a Whisky snob at all. Used to get Dewars all the time and I would like to get as close to that as possible so I got a SS Scotch to try. My wife loves the SS Spiced Rum. Haven't really tried other brands yet but I am really enjoying this hobby!

One thing I have sitting is a SpiritsUnlimited Gin Mix http://www.spiritsunlimited.co.nz/consumables/gin-mix-h218 You add it to 500Ml of 40% and then after 12 days you add 100Ml to 1L of 40%. I love Gin and hope this one works out well. Smells VERY nice. Quite cheap as well $5 NZD.

Vodka IS Well cut neutral mate... The idea is to remove flavour, not add it back in!

"Still Spirits Top Shelf Candy Shots"
11209424_1646081698965763_6589204981532998410_n.jpg

Chilling in the freezer right now.
Will have a nip or two before i hit "post".
Looks n smells yum.

1 Bottle of "Still Spirits Top Shelf Candy Shots" - 50ml
Directions -
Add to 650ml of 40%ABV
Add that to SS Liqueur Base "A"
Whisk in large mixing bowl.
Top up to 1.125L with water

*Taste Test*
Not overly sweet, not exactly tasting like "candy" either though.
Just syrupy and sweet.

Kra$h,

This is off topic, I know, but if you weren't happy with that candy shot stuff, have a look at this; you won't be dissapointed. :music-deathmetal:

I new to this, only do it to create my own spirits for a fraction of the cost of buying from a bottle shop. Learning though! Stripping run, making cuts. But as far as flavours, I pretty much only have me local HBS for essences and yes Vodka was one of them, and I did like it! Tasted like a shop bought Vodka. But then I'm no expert.....yet. But you guys with the wisdom will set me straight. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Now that you've found us you can start concentrating on making BETTER spirits than you can buy from the bottlo, still for a fraction of the price :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I've been making rum for a few years. It's good.

This 'arvo a mate gave me a taste of the rum he made by mixing his neutral with Coral Sea Essence. A tad sweet, but not without it's merit.

This reminded me that some folk lack the means to produce traditional rums, bourbons etc.

If that's the case.

Don't be shy to try a few essences. :obscene-drinkingcheers:

I would think that essence would be like an alcohol cordial kind of thing, I reckon it would be no where as good as the plain old molasses rums the boys make from the forum

I could be wrong but that's my view as a beginner :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Copperhead,
Some people only have a reflux still and can't detune it ( t500 style ) then essences are a good way of imitating the flavours they enjoy.
A lot of guys here started the same way, and a well cut tpw makes some good essence based liqueurs.

Cooper, woodsys just suggesting that if you only have a reflux to make vodka then yeah, try the essences, not as good as the real thing but still ok :handgestures-thumbupleft:
In fact, thinking on it, when you get your pot, try out a vodka essence to make a neutral.

Spot on Dubj  Thanks.

Stillbilly, I've been making "real" rum for years.

I'm simply recalling where it all began.

In particular, I remember how intimidating it can be when you read what the "boys from the forum" are making and the negative slant placed on HBS products.

At the end of the day, we are all chasing a safe, homemade spirit that we can share with friends and family. Be it through traditional methods, or whatever means we have available ;-)
