Isn't port (or tawney) just wine with neutral added to up the abv and then aged for longer in a barrel before botteling?

Probably only as good as other escenses and never as good as oaking it yourself.

I couldn't remember exactly how they do it - recall something about it being a "fortified" wine. Did't think it was neutral that they used, I thought it was a brandy of a particular wine/grape variety...
Either way, it's close but not really the same.

I always assumed it would be brandy, but i guess its whatever the winery wants to use. They are allowed to produce spirits for fortification excise free, and they are all set up to ferment grapes, so it would make sense to make spirit from wine.

orcy is pretty much on the money; port is fortified with Neutral Grape Spirit.

The good ones use good brandy. Tawny port is port that's also spent some time on oak.
I lurve port! :))
I have some fantastic bottles but I can never bring myself to open them. Polished off a nice bottle of 1976 Yalumba that had a leaking cork last night. It had aged beautifully.

Back on topic. If you love a nice bottle of port I wouldn't bother with an essence. Look how badly they replicate spirits!
Ports need love and time from suitable grapes to ferment and be bottled as 'full bodied' ports. I doubt an essence can replicate this.
I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on it if you decide to try though.
Cheers,
Warra

I heard something about that but port still gets used by a lot of the wineries. For those that dont they call em fortified wine.
Most Portugese ports I've tried seem closer to a muscat so not sure what they're whinging about.

I'm not a port drinker these days, however I worked with a bloke a few years ago that would buy mid priced port and store it in a barrel. Just topped it up when needed. He seemed to think a few months in the barrel improved the product.
Anything but an essence would be my vote :handgestures-thumbupleft:
