Kraken from Essence

Postby challpa » Mon Jul 02, 2018 7:09 pm

Found this kit in a local Home Brew Shop claiming a Kraken clone

Prestige brand essences
1 x Jamaica Rum essence
2 x Rum Spice essence

Was meant to make 2.25 litres
I used neutral from my turbo 500 that had been on oak chips

Was nice but found a bit overpowering (especially the vanilla) so diluted to equivalent of 3.3 litres from same amount of essence and now loving it

I have found another recipe using Samuel Willards Trinidad Rum and spices (allspice berries, cloves, cardamom pods, star anise, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc etc) so Im also keen to try this as should be easy to customise to taste

Glad it's to your palate, mate :handgestures-thumbupleft: It's rare the cordials can match the big boys. I hope Proximo don't find out :))

3 sachets of essence for 2.25 liters? Sounds expensive for essence (@ about $10 a sachet) but still cheaper than buying 3 bottles of kraken. You reckon its pretty close then or you just like the taste?
I'm not a fan of rum but I have friends and family that are.

Its not the sachets its the Prestige Brand Essence bottles at about $6.00 each (not the still spirits sachets)
I think when made up from oaked spirit at 3.3 litres instead of 2.2 its pretty close except for the slightly stronger vanilla.
Might not be to everybodys taste but Im certainly enjoying it

Make it from the spices... You won't regret it and will have a pride in creating it as opposed to mixing up goop

yes mate
I have put up 2 versions of the spiced rum under recipe and development on this site.
It was a recipe from my grandad back in the 70s.
Now I found Trinidad rum essence worked a treat with the spices.
You can do what my grandad did all those years ago and use a mollasas wash to flavour but I quite like the Trinidad.
You probably found it on this site and I used the Easy Spiced Rum heading.
There are 2 versions.
The first is what he used with the molasas mix or the 2nd was what I found that works.
Both taste great and can be played with to suit your own taste.
I have found 48% alcohol works well but don't go over it as it seems too peppery no matter how much you filter it.
