I am loving Canadian Club Whisky at the moment, I have looked up that its a rye whisky? is this so?
Has any one made this, would you need to oak it? or just add the essence (Top Shelf Rye Whisky)?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've got some mates who love CC.

I make them some from time to time, I use double distilled TPW and I mix it with Top Shelf Rye Whiskey or Prestige Canadian Whiskey essence - Prestige is what they prefer.

I believe they've stopped making this essence (or so my LHBS tells me)

grain bill includes rye, rye malt, barley malt and corn

Taken directly from the CC website.
If you want a product that tastes like CC I'd be inclined to do the following in the absence of a verified grain bill:
1. Do a 100% rye, with enzymes
2. Do a 100% rye malt
3. Do a 100% barley malt
4. Do a 100% corn, with enzymes
5. Now comes the fun blending stage, don't forget tails are very important.

If that all sounds like too much work try a hit and miss all-in method like:
40% rye
20% malted rye
20% malted barley
20% corn
Or any variation you care to dream up.

But whatever you do, give the essence idea a miss.

Yep let's not start that debate here, the OP has posted in the essence section for a reason and no one has yet gave any guidance in regards to his original question.

My answer would be oak what you have at 65% then after watering down add small amounts of the essence to get it how you want :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Sorry, I missed the fact this was an essence question.

Let me change my recommendations to the following:
Keeping in mind that CC is not a 100% rye whisky you'll need to purchase a number of essences to achieve the desired blend you need.
Try:
1. Edwards Super Smooth Kentucky Bourbon
2. Edwards Tennesee Style Bourbon
3. Edwards Mature Oak (if you feel it's needed)
4. Samuel Willards Rye Whiskey or Still Spirits Top Shelf Rye Whiskey

I make a bourbon blend using the first 3 essences, that will give you your corn base and then you just need to add enough of the rye to hit the spot.
I rarely find an essence I like but by blending essences I've been able to make some amazing products.

Have just mixed my first ever essence .. SS Top Shelf Rye. Its not bad but not great either. It has a mild whiskey flavour and is quite smooth but nothing stands out. Just tastes cheap at the moment. I think it will be massively improved with some oak.
I like the idea of blending essences but really I just intend to use them as a base to put on oak and develop some flavour. This is only going to be drinking stock anyway. Once I have a bit in the cupboard I will then start trying some AG methods :D

EDIT: I wont try to run before I can walk ... I will try some of the cereal whiskeys before AG. Zaks CFW will be my first :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I made a whiskey using CBW Rye beer kits. I went with them because they were unhopped, (although further reading here it seems that hopped beer works to). I bought some malt packs for extra flavour too. It gave me a very smooth, pleasant tasting drink. I was trying for a more scotchy flavour but ended up with more of a CC ish final product. Using beer kits gets a bit exy though.

Canadian whisky is mostly a high rye blended whiskey, my choice is Crown Royal , beats the hell out of CC. you just have a reflux jobbie, fine. Do a grain or cereal based wash/mash like weetbix, bran or flour washes or if ya choose a mash, oats make a very smooth spirit. Then to that spirit add the Canadian whisky essence and if ya want include the rye essence, dont mess with bourbon and scotch essences as they will be nothing like it.

Not a fan of essence but the rye whisky ones are not to bad I'm drinking one that is supposed to taste like crown royal which doesn't really but still tastes like a rye whiskey and is good

I can't remember the bottle the bloke at the hbs just said try this it's a crown royal rip off
