Ive been tasked with trying to make some "midori". I have double distilled tpw as neutral base. What sort of essences have people used for making midori and what were your thoughts. Hoping aomone will save me heartache of shelling out coin for something foul. Thanks in advance

if there is a white rum you make, or a white rum essence you like just use that and soak some fresh coconut in it

I have used the Still Spirits "Top Shelf Melon Liqueur" before, however I added the sugar and glucose myself vs the spirit base mixture.

No complaints, but I have not tried it myself.

Is an expensive one, as it only makes 1125ml to one essence bottle.

Can't remember the brand but one has a about 150 - 200ml bottle? That you add and it is quite good, haven't done it for a while but it was a hit when I did. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

This makes an excellent Malibu......9 out of 10 chicks from the 80's can't tell the difference between this and the original

I reckon that's the one I was thinking of, if it's in a big bottle :handgestures-thumbupleft:

The 80s were crazy though, most don't remember their name... but thanks will give that 1 a crack too I think. have you made it using TPW? I'm pretty happy with how clean the tpw neutral turns out but I had wondered seeing as I've tried malibu knock offs 3x unsuccessfully if it was something to do with the neutral base.

Thanks Magnus for the link. might try an essence first and if all else fails go the fruit route. have bookmarked it :)

Hi Guys,
Thought I would chime back in here after making up some Malibu and Midori that passed the Wifey test.
In fact it surpassed the test as I did blind tasting with Wifey and she guessed the Midori wrong and although she got the Malibu right she did so grudgingly as she preferred the home made!
I used the Samuel Willards essences.

Note that these are the premix 375ml bottles... You use the whole bottle to make 1125ml
No the cheapest method but all you need is 40% neutral and the essence bottle so easy and great results.

Those are the two that I use all the time and they always pass the swmbo test. I don't bother with adding the water that they recommend though I just use tpw neutral all the way.

I make the Willardy's for my daughter. I bottle does two 750 ml bottles. Normally add 40% vodka.

To me it tasted very close. A bit sweeter maybe. Daughter likes it cause it's cheap.

is that the premix willards. ive had good success with the premix willards since starting this post. but only makes 1x1125 according to the bottle if you do it right to the specs ie 40% + x amount of water. do you just do 40% enough for 2x700mls inc premix?

My wife likes Midori so I have tried a couple of the essences for her using TPW - Essencia Melonori and Edwards Melon Liqueur....

Wifey likes the Edwards better and thinks its better than the original - definitely tastes more 'melony'....

She likes the Essencia also....and I think this one tastes more like the original.

Went to HBS on weekend and bought Still Spirits Melon essence and a bag of schnapps base. Mixed it up and it seems a little weak in melon flavor though I haven't had Midori in yonks so I could be wrong, made it up to 1125ml as instructions but maybe a little less water would be better. Saw a bottle of Samuel Willards premix and may give it a try next time.

Also saw the Still Spirits Coconut Rum premix bag like above so gave that a go too

I always use more essence than it says.... usually if it says use for 2.25 litres I'll make two 750ml bottles instead. The essence is too weak in my opinion
