I agree CC. I have got a couple of these elements and I will vouch for their quality, they truly are top of the line. No wonder you can't keep any stock.

Ive decided to make a 70L mash tun, i will post what and how i go about it later ,,, but need to know if your getting stock in the next fortnight ?

Hey Mac,

I have screwed my budget for a couple of weeks and have to wait a month to get my electrical work done anyway.

Can you please put my name down for one of these weldless elements when they do come in? I assume one will do the job just take a while longer to get up to heat?

Couple of quick questions,

Weldless or welded element. Which do you believe is a better option?

Regarding the weldless option, I take it there is no plug for these elements so what extras would i need to complete the electrical side of the install?

Also, what is the advantage/s of the guard for the element over running without one?

The weldless elements are held in by a nut against the wall of the boiler, where the welded are screwed in through the thread of a socket welded into the boiler. Functionally, I don't see any difference. I did run with weldless elements for a couple of years though and never had any problem.

For parts to complete the install, you will need some heavy gauge cable (15A or more), and a plug to put on the end of it (10 or 15A plug depending on what you're doing), and get a sparky to wire it up for you.

The guard is a safety issue, as it prevents live 240V/10A contacts and bare wires being exposed. It's also a shield for anything that may spill, which happens now and again in distilling, you will have a cover to protect the live wires, rather than some liquid splashing there and shorting the element contacts.

I have several boilers including a welded element type and a weldless element boiler.
I now strongly prefer the type that have a ferrule welded to the boiler that the element triclamps onto.

Can pull elements out easily for inspection
Can use as drain when cleaning boiler

Cons
Needs access to welding gear

Also lads, I've got 2 of the Weldless jobbies in my boiler...they have never failed, never leaked and never failed to boil the crap outta my wash.

Although I have welded sockets in my boiler, I wouldn't consider them a 'better' option and would be more than happy to have quality weldless elements. At the end of the day, they are both put through holes in the boiler and held in by thread, the only difference being the thread of a socket or a nut.

I only went to welded sockets after keg king weldless elements, but have since purchased a few of these as backups or just to replace the others in my old boiler.

If anyone is tossing up between the two, I reckon the weldless ones might even be held in a bit stronger by the nut, as opposed to the few turns of thread in the socket. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Posted this the other day on my boiler build thread but thought it was appropriate. 30's flat and 2lt water was warm. Bloody good elements mac

I wished I used the bar type rather than the others when I was running plum wash full of sludge, skin & seeds :angry-banghead:

Sorry to bring up old threads but I am considering getting one of these with the guard kit (2400w) are these Ultra low density or even low density?

I have a 2400w Ultra low density already (weld in) and have no issue with burning my wash or wort when I do all grain etc

Just wanting to cut my heat up time down (can run 2 10amp circuits but no access to 15amp or higher :( )

Would also be nice to throw 3000-3600w at my 4" bubbler as I have issues keeping constant flow at 2400w as my cooling seems to be way to good haha
