Defiantly different, so what is above the RC it looks like a gin basket and small packed section. :-B

Looking forward to this. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

above the RC is a gin caddy and short straight to hold the botanical basket, it's pretty much a carter head with 3 plate sections in it.

Running neutral watered back to 40% through this should give a crisp flavoursome product at 90% plus ABV, and the plates will be loaded with oils from the botanicals too, so basically infused 4 times in one run :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'll be giving it a go once my new boiler turns up, I want to infuse some white rum I have here with lemongrass, black peppercorns & a little dried ginger root.

Been meaning to ask this for a while, but it's one of a thousand questions constantly vying for attention.
Do you sell the Carter head without a pc etc? I see most of what I would imagine it comprises in the store but who knows.

Yes you can buy just the column sure, I'd just have to have a bit of a look at what I've sold them like this for. half drunk just now and don't like quoting prices ;-)

There's a couple of bits not listed in the store, the only real specialty thing you'd need would be thumper down tube but I'm getting those prefabbed too now.

Wait until you's see the 300L 6" commercial Carter head pot still in a few weeks set up in it's distillery here in Perth, I'm flying to China in a couple of weeks just to check everything over before it's sent, and to finalise plans for some other new stuff I'll be releasing in a few months.

I don't understand how these things work ......I get the vapour in fusing the botanicals and being condensed ...but what is the sight glass section and bottom valve for

I'm only a novice at this as well Yummy...
But my guess would be for any excess oils that may gather from the botanicals in the basket.

So it flows down through the other oils... sort of a fail safe.

Yeah the sight glass is there as an oil reservoir that needs the level maintained as these rigs have a fair amount of passivr reflux, I'm working on reflux return at the moment and have just about got it sorted.

By having the reservoir we can double it as a thumper to pump vapor through the oils, enhancing flavor and depth to the final product.

The condenser up top is there simply for removing the basket without switching the boiler off, I may even end up putting the RC directly on the boiler as where it is it's going to induce more passive reflux.

The aim is to run it as a pot still with 4 oil infusions & lastly a botanical infusion while maintaining a high ABV, and utilising the passive reflux until it's returned to the boiler via a pee trap & pipe.

I hope that makes sense.

Hey Mac

What about putting the plates before the carter head for a gentler infusion whilst raising the ABV to produce a cleaner spirit? Is this how Doc runs Methuselah?

The return line sounds good. I did a couple of cleaning runs on my new carter head (1 vinegar and 1 alcohol) and collected 1.5 litres (stupidly forgot to measure ABV before ditching) from a 30l wash of approx 20%. Whilst I can throw this back into feints, yield per run is reduced.

Mac,

Could you run this column off the neutraliser column with the two columns sitting side by side connected by a insulated 3" vapour line?
Just a thought on being able to do the neutral and the gin at the same time without the normal height concerns of a 6 plate neutraliser plus carter head set-up.

Cheers,

Mech.

Mech; the beauty of modular stills is that with enough imagination and a big enough budget you can do whatever you could possibly want.

Whether or not it is effective is another matter :) there's only one way to find out!
