Power Controller - Confusion

Postby Clubby » Mon Mar 20, 2017 12:29 pm

I am just about to order the parts, to build a power controller. At the moment it will be working with the T500 boiler, but want to upgrade as soon as possible.

I have been reading up, on all the builds. Bit think i am starting to confuse things. As i would rather build once.

So just checking. The things i need to order are:-

- Solid State Relay (25amp or 40amp? )
- Heat sink and Potentiometer to suit the SSR
- Computer fan (Was thinking of putting 2 in)
- 240 volt to 12 volt transformer (already have a few computer funs that are 12v)
- Volt meter
- Case (bigger then i need).

And without saying, a qualified electrician to check it out.

Cheers

That's not a bad thing allows for airflow.

I was wondering what was inside this when I bought it, you answered it perfectly.

I was also willing to build my own controller but on the side I have a couple of 3D printers that keep me busy wiring and building.

Got lazy and hit the button rather than waiting on parts from multiple suppliers. Looks good tho for the price.

I would be concerned about those screw terminals on the back. The possibility for live wires working their way lose or breaking off is very real as there is no strain relief for the cables.

Prof. Green.

I think I would either fit plug and socket to the back including an earth for both in, out and chassis as there does not seem to be any protection if the case goes "live". Otherwise fit cable glands and connect up internally with heavy duty cables. That is what I did for my home build. The out cable I used an IEC 10 amp kettle plug not a computer power supply lead which are often too light. If i had known I could buy this I would have gone this way instead of building my own as this is cheaper but I did learn a few things on the way.

Wiring it internally using cable glands and adding the earth sounds like a good plan for when mine arrives.
