New SSR controller

Postby caspian » Sun Nov 19, 2017 3:32 pm

Hi all, some pics of my second controller, SSR based this time.

Cast alloy box from RS Online, quite a bit of work filing all of the holes for the panel hardware.
Heavy duty 2W metal wound resistor from RS.
Fotek 40A SSR, probably a chinesium clone, but works OK and doesn't get hot, even without the fan blast. SSR to heatsink and heatsink to box is all bedded with temperature transfer goop.
eBay special railmount Hall effect wattmeter.
Big 240V fan, shifts heaps of air.
eBay quarter turn switch, another chinesium special, I think it's "rated" for 600V/10A so hopefully it can handle 1800W peak and 1100W run without issues.
Everything common-rail earthed.

Next time I will reverse the position of the power switch and the control pot, the pot is a lot easier to wire and get neat.

Very very nice, good work.

Silly electrically challenged question, why use a metal casing? Is it function or looks?

mostly functional, because I wanted to try it. the material cuts pretty easily with hand tools and some patience.

it does automatically ground the pot body but you could do the same thing by soldering a wire from the back of the pot casing to a common ground if using a non-conductive housing.
