I'm about to build a power controller and need some advice on ssr types. What is the difference between a SSR-40VA and a SSR-40DA? Which one should I buy?

Not sure, but you could save yourself some time and buy one of these from fleabay ..

It bought two of these (one as a backup, but haven't needed the second one)

Works great. Just had to wait for it to arrive from China.

If the url above doesn't work, search www.5stardistilling.com.au.com for AC 220V 5000W SCR Voltage Regulator

equipment: Eve - 4" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (sieve plates), 330 mm packed section on a keg boiler with 2 x 2000 W elements.
Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

Don't quote me but I believe its to do with the type of voltage used to control it. Mines a DA and uses a knob to control it. I believe th VA uses an input usually from a pid type controller. Double check that though as I'm on nightshift and cant check it out to be certain.

VA for pot control (variable resistor)
DA for relay control (PID)

I used one of these https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AC-220V-100 ... SwZ8ZXA4Vh and one of these https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AC-80-260V- ... Swy5ZXB2yC, then put them in a old mig welder case like this -->

been working fine for 10 months & a 1500l or so of wash driving a 3600w element.
