Dual 4000w controllers

Postby Chips Molasses » Sun May 04, 2014 6:57 pm

As a proof on concept, I screwed this together today. I had two elements I had bought to use in a grain boiler ages ago, and have never used them.

I added 2 x 4000 w controllers as used by others on here from EBay. I have 6mm wire ready to wire these up, but wanted to know if they were going to work. It all seems to work just fine (I have not run it flat out yet)

I have it all set up on two 10 amp plugs so I can run up to 4800w without blowing anything up.

I know it looks rough, BUT it worked!!!

Are you going to give it some ventilation? with 2 controllers i recon that might get a bit warm.

Here is a good reason to use metal cabinets scroll to the bottom.

Where on earth did you score 240v fans for $4 ?!

I didn't bother putting in fans my controller after I found it doesn't even even really run that hot (Cool to the touch after 1 hour at 50%)

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221412803765 couldn't find it for $4 but $10 with free postage. The 12 v fans are cheap as chips, the 240 v ones are dearer. Regardless, the controller complete and the elements all combined still cost less than 4 bottles of scotch or rum from a bottle shop. Can't wait to run it, I have 40l of stripped molasses rum from the 220 l wash I did. Today I also bought the 3600w rated cable, I will rewire the box with that, and wire in the fan.

Ran for the first time electric today. This was the 35l I had stripped from my 200l rum wash. Used both elements to heat, and switched to the lower one only for the spirit run. Temp at the top,of the column was a pretty constant 80 degrees c just a constant thin line of output from the parrot. Pulled out 11 litres between 90% and 70%.

I stopped collecting heads at 800ml as the taste had taken on an earthiness and a better mouth feel. I still have around 25l in the boiler, some hearts still left in that, but I ran out of day. I have 10l at around 80% sitting on second hand oak chips. I have heaps of new ones, but I wanted to experiment with the corn whiskey oak, and see if some of the corn whiskey flavour would find it's way in. Has a little problem with the holes, I used a hole saw, and one of the holes wouldn't thread the element in. Had to plug that one and try again.

The controller I screwed together worked fine. The controllers did generate some heat so I just left the lid off. Fan is still on its way.

Thanks for all your help to get me to where I am.

Lol. Where do I buy more day? I was busy fixing one car and servicing another, plus doing some stuff for my sporting club... Day off is busier than a day at work.
