So i found this in the shed the other day.

I was wondering if i could rig this up with an SSR and use it to temperature control my future HERMS. This is a link i found for it

What does supply 3VA max mean? .....doesn't sound good.


This was in the same box. Is this a transformer?

Looking at it, it would seem that unit only does cooling
So it'd be all cool for a fermentation chamber for summer, but I don't think you'll be heating with it
I'd stick with an Auber PID for your HERMS, they're a proven unit

That is the power consumption the unit uses just to run itself. The unit will also switch 15 amp at 250v to control a device.

Yes it is a transformer. It is not needed by the IC901 controller. Your controller uses OZ 240 volts as the supply.

The IC901 controller, according to the user manual, can be configured to do heating as well as cooling...

The other thing is a thermostat like this is not really suited to controlling a HERMs
It will shut off the element once it reaches temp, and the temp will continue to rise a bit as the residual heat from the element comes off
Whereas with a PID, it plots the temp rise and shuts off where it thinks is right to reach your set temp (and will adjust as need be)
If you're wanting to hit certain temps for different protein rests and etc (which is the main point of a HERMs, right?), the thermostat won't give you the accuracy you want

Interesting. A lot of those data sheets are just gobbly gook to me, cant make heads or tails out of them. You're right though, looks like it can control from -55 to 99c which is interesting.

And that transformer....could i use that for a computer fan? I was just about to buy a 240v fan from ebay but i have heaps computer fans lying about

ah ok. I thought it was the SSR giving you the accurate control, but that makes sense. Mind you, you could tell me anything and i'd probably believe it hahaha

Have you got a link on those Auber PIDs? Search on ebay doesn't come up with anything.

Does it have to be Auber? Or are the others ok to use as well?

Auber are apparently the duck's nuts, but others say the Sestos ones work just fine

I'd go with a PT100 sensor, common opinion is that the Type K is no good

No ...First ,its AC output not DC. So you would need a Rectifier ( and a filter capacitor) .
Secondly , Computer fans are usually 12 DC so you would need to add a regulator to reduce the Rectified 24VAC ( which would be closer to 32V due to the filter cap) down to 12 Vdc .

Could be done but a lot of shagging around .....I'd just get a 230 V AC fan

The 60A SSR that comes with the Sestos unit will work fine, it's rated for UP TO 60A, not just for 60A
but if you're buying the SSR and the PID separately, the 40A SSR should work, it'll handle up to 9600W (I think)
I'm not a sparkie, just an ex heating element designer, so my electrical advice should be taken with a grain of salt :teasing-blah:
