Pot still build

Postby Mouse. » Fri Aug 15, 2014 11:09 pm

Hi all

Had a lot of fun on this site getting advice and reading up on the how to.
Finally got my 2 inch pot still and electric boiler completed and had a lot of fun doing it with advice from posts on this forum, so thanks for posting.

Boiler completed with FSD elements, 2400 and a 3600 watts on board, thanks MacStill and his element design as well. :text-thankyoublue:

A few challenges getting the elements sorted so they didn't touch in the middle, cut a 1inch ferrule in half, 5 ml off centre, worked a treat.

Wielded the stainless with arc rods, surprised at how well they flowed. Cleaned up the wields and purged with acetone, happy with the results.

Wielded the 4 inch filler port and fitted the elements.

Finished.

Completed a vinegar run and the liebig knocked down all the vapour with both elements running, one leak in the water jacket to fix.

30 lt TPW wash is nearly ready for the sacrificial run and a 60 lt BWKO is nearly ready. Knocked up a couple of STC1000 heat controllers on heat belts wrapped the fermenters in foam and these bloody frosts are still challenging.

Getting close to a real alcohol run and some good bourbon.

Thanks to everyone that has posted the good info on the forum.

Excellent idea! That keg is beautiful.

I built my potstill the same way, with a union. When I do spirit runs on it I pack the tower with copper mesh. As the boiler is coming up to temp I keep the condenser pointed straight up in the air so it acts like a reflux condenser. After taking the fores at a drip per second and the heads a bit faster, I put it straight up again and increase the cooling flow to try and compress the heads as best as possible. After pitching it back down and collecting a tiny bit more heads, I move to my hearts jars. I'm able to get over 85% abv if I collect slowly at the beginning of the run. Just an idea if you want to mess around with it.

Great work, this is much nicer looking than my potstill. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
