Copper in vapour path of pot still

Postby Johnny B Shiney » Sun Aug 24, 2014 4:09 pm

Hey fellas

I am currently knocking up a pot still for bourbons and it is way cheaper and easier for me to make the whole lot out of stainless, but I read that copper in the vapour path is good for removing sulphides.

I was thinking some copper mesh in the column but I dont want any refluxing, so does anyone know if this is a good idea or not and if its ok to have a some copper mesh in a pot still, how much?. The column will be 50mm diameter by about 500mm high, then a tee, reducer down to 25mm, elbow and then liebig arm condensor with a thermometer in the top of tee.

If I was to use copper for the column, tee and reducer would this be enough for the sulphides thing without packing? I cant see much vapour coming into contact with copper doing it this way.

Thanks in advance for any replies

I dont think it would matter that much mate
if you look at FSD store all his stills are stainless
if I could afford and work with stainless I would

You still need some copper mate unless you like rotten egg smell :puke-huge:

It only takes a small amount of copper to get rid of it.

Making the riser out of copper should be enough but if you want yo make it out of stainless you will only need a handful of mesh in the vapour path. If it's a proper pot still with no reflux condenser then almost no refluxing should occur :handgestures-thumbupleft:

well there you go. Feel like a dumb arse. Didn't relise that. I thought it was a basically a cost and the ability to work with stainless issue. Learning learning. .....

so in FSD stainless pot stills is there some form of copper inside?

I tend to try not spend much time in his store. Its like been in strip joint. U can look but don't touch. Its a tease lol with all the stella gear he has for offer. El primo :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Not as they come mate, but you can easily add your own or get the structured copper from the 5Star store :handgestures-thumbupleft:

All good Timmsy :handgestures-thumbupleft:

You can get the copper mesh from the store too ;-)

But yeah if there isn't any copper it really does stink.

The bubblers all have copper plates so it's not an issue just when your running them as a pot you want that bit of copper :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Ah 1 2 beat me to it :-D

http://www.5stardistilling.net/2-pot-still/

Here's our basic no frills 2" pot still perfect for the beginner.

The column height is 600mm

2" shotgun product condenser

1/2" BSP female coolant connections

boiler clamp & seal included

*Bonus* 2" roll of copper mesh for sulphide removal.

The same amount will do, and I'll honour the same bonus of a 2" roll of mesh for the next 1/2 dozen units sold :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks for the replies fellas, great info.
I will get a handful of mesh and place it at the top in the horizontal area between column and product condensor.
I am thinking higher up the better after reading the thread on cleaning the copper bubbler plates.
