CRB's 2" Pot Still

Postby CaptainRedBeard » Fri Sep 26, 2014 7:23 am

So I figured there's not enough time in the day, and this build tool me 2 stupid weeks. Any skilled craftsman out the could probably knock it over in an arvo, but that's just not me.
The solder Job is dodgy, but holds, and most of the joins aren't square or anything that should be shown to the likes of a trained eye. The shotgun condenser was a pain in the ass to solder, but it taught me a lot in the trials and errors department. So now I have myself a 2" pot still, with my first batch of UJSM on ferment.

Very nice, mate!

My pot isn't very sexy either, but when you do that first spirit run you'll forget all about the looks!

I'm hoping your right zak, but the thing is ugly! Had one solder to go (Shotgun to coupling) and my gas started to run a bit low, not enough heat getting onto the pipe, so I went for a walk down to a blacksmith next to my work, he's got an oxy, also been in the trade 30+ years.... he mauled the final join. More like a thick, speckled weld, trying to whirlpool the join instead of braze, and he hated the fact I was using silver rods with no flux. None the less the things together.

Silver rods with no flux is the best! As long as the copper is clean, you can just wave the heat around and the solder will follow it...

My pot still was my first foray into playing with copper, and Agrajag is my second... By the time you're halfway through a bubbler you'll be laughing!

Well that's the scary part zak, I'm thinking of going big! Like, something that is beyond my skill level, my needs, or my knowledge of the craft. Probably beyond my price range too, but I can't say what the build is yet, I've heard that once I've said it, it must be done. "AussieDistiller" rules :?

But I haven't yet seen this build, not sure whether it's been done yet

Agrajag; big, beyond my skill level, my needs and my knowledge of the craft.

If I can build a 6" bubbler, anyone can :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Agrajag is an awesome build, and it has its partial influence towards my next build. Gonna get silly with it :D

Thats debatable!! Mate there are a lot of pot stills out there held together by flour paste and binder clips. You've got yourself a fine looking pot still there!

Congrats and good luck with your first wash!

CRB you have done good.I had to zoom in looking for the so called shitty job but its fine to me .
There is nothing there that a file wont fix if you're really worried about it.

If it doesnt leak and it wont fall apart , job done :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Time to boil up some vinegar and water

Looks good red :handgestures-thumbupleft: who said your first had to be perfect, hell none of mine have been :)) , those little imperfections add character. The main thing is that it works, which I'm sure it will.
Well done I recon you should be proud of your accomplishments

Thanks duck. I am both proud, and ashamed. The next one I'll be more careful and do every solder with a bit more finesse :handgestures-thumbupleft: Cheers
