First run wash though pot still, then through the reflux: Is it worth it? Will add essence later.

I "think" he's asking about stripping a wash before running it as a neutral given the mention of essences.

It's not strictly necessary with a reflux still JOHNYWALKER however some folks, like myself, do. I run a Neutraliser but cannot use all 5 plates and packed section so I strip 2 batches of wash into low wines, combine the results and do a nice slow spirit with run through 4 plates and a packed section and it makes a very good neutral.

What sort of reflux still have you got JOHNYWALKER? That may help us make suggestions for your run strategy.

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

The T500 will do a reasonable job in a single run but I think running a stripped wash though it will get the best possible result.

The next question is, have you got a pot still too or do you just have the T500 column?

If you've only got the T500 column, then the decision has pretty much been made for you as you can't really do a stripping run with it although you could do a double distillation if you wanted to.

If you've got a pot still, I would strip two 25 litre batches of TPW or WBAB into low wines, then combine them, ensure they're no more than 40% once they're mixed together and then do a spirit run through the column to get a nice healthy hearts cut.

Have you read these threads?
- Running a T500, the Proper Way?
- Kiwistiller's Novice Guide to Cuts and Fractions

They will be tremendously helpful in getting the results you're after.

Having said all that, why essences? What type of spirits are you trying to make?

Cheers,
Prof. Green.
