1.25" pot still

Postby copperhead road » Thu Jun 29, 2017 7:08 am

I am wondering if this DIY home made pot still would be big enough as a stripping still, I am thinking that my HP gas burner will be to powerful for the 1.25" at the bottom. It's going on a 50 litre beer keg
It's going to have a shotty on it 400mm x 2" with 3 vapour tubes :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Why not just build a simple 2" pot still?

Looks complex for a stripping still. It would probably work though. Would need a decent sized shotgun for the PC though to slow the vapour speed a bit if you want to use huge amounts of power through it. Probably bigger than a 2" with 3 tubes. I run a 2" with 5 tubes and that's good for 5000 watts, probably more, but what's a hp gas burner worth? 10,000 watts plus?

220,000 BTU not sure what that works out at in watts :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Standard crab cooker from BCF is 60,000 BTU to give you some kind of an idea

It boils 50 litres of water in 17 minutes :handgestures-thumbupleft: and is quiet as a mouse

Google tells me about 65 kw. Definitely lose some to waste heat though.
Still bucketloads though.

Copy the pelican pot in the pot section here. Grab a yellow can blow torch (mapp equivelant) a roll of lead free solder and some bakers flux. It really is simple to knock up a pot. Pm me if you need help along the way..

That has an rc and a sight glass. Not needed on a stripper :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I think I live in your neck of the woods and I'm on holidays next week. I can help out too if you'd like. Building a pot still head really is easy.

equipment: Eve - 4" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (sieve plates), 330 mm packed section on a keg boiler with 2 x 2000 W elements.
Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

Will do buddy, I grabbed my yellow torch on the weekend.

Thanks again bluc

Oh is there a thread getting around here with the fittings, bends and lengths required, appreciate if anyone knows

If you have a tradelink near you I would suggest you go there. They were less than half the price of reece for parts when I built my pot still.

I've always found the independent plumbing supplies to be quite a bit cheaper than tradelink even.
