Just wondering if anyone here uses an old style onion head on top of their boiler? I was thinking about fashioning something out of an old copper meters pot

Not experience, but I had the same ‘infatuation’ with it when I started. No disrespect intended, afterall, all the big still seem to have one - why wouldn’t I!?!?

Turns out it’s function (other than lightening your wallet) is to do a minor reflux action... so I bought a bubbler instead!

I made my thumper so I could use it as a boil ball or onion head ,without plate for rum and whiskey washs, the shape is ta stop pukeing washs getting through to your plates or condencers,I used a 5gal SS keg as it had ta support the weight of the 4plate bubbler and it sits on a 18gal boiler ,and I have never had pukeing problems since .cheers hillzabilly ;-)

Cheers for all the replies. All the destillerys that I visited over in tassie were pretty much all bubbles accept sullivans cove I think it an onion head  pretty sure they were onto their second one as all the sulfides strip away the copper in the head and made it thin and wore through... thought might've been one of the positives about the onion too removing sulfides.
Maybe I'll just get 2 of the copper pots and make my boiler out of it think I seen 2 for $55 on gumtree :happy-partydance:

The copper takes care of the sulfide, whatever the shape. So the onion heads’ pupose is not specifically for the suofides!

That’s the purpose of the cool... just to clarify!

Yeah right, good luck with your bubbler build in any case.
