First run on McStill pot still

Postby poompy » Sat Jul 28, 2012 11:37 am

Going great! Stripping a tpw. I chucked the first 250ml. Now running down to 20%. Will repeat the process next week with another tpw. Then chuck both through the T500.

Prior to this it was a vinegar run followed by two cheap casks of wine

Thanks again McStill :-D

2.5hrs from turning it on and turning it off. It took 50min for the first drops to start

Massive, stripping was the best thing I did to improve the quality of the product coming out of the T500

poompy, i'm interested to know what ABV you got from the stripping run?
I do a 25L stripping run with the T500 de-tuned in about the same time to first drops and total time - but it's prolly lower ABV - 50-55% average for the run

stripping run went well (twice now) ended up with approx 6.25l at 48%

ran the two lots of low wines through my t500 and ended with 6L of spirit. This is separated into 400ml lots by 15. Middle jar already tastes better than the last lot of spirit i made. So looking promising so far.

Only issue from the run today is that it really highlighted how small the condensor is on the t500. Would a worm of some sort work on the out let to help knock down the vapour?

Could you do a spirit run with the pot head on the t500 boiler? I am looking at getting a pothead made up for my t500 for stripping and the thought has crossed my mind for making whiskey and or rum

Did my first spirit run on Saturday just gone. Was pretty hard on the cuts but the product definitely tasted great off the still. Going to grab a controller soon so that I can vary the voltage.

Nice set up. How much does one of them set you back.

I think i paid about 650 for the t500 still setup and the pot still i got through this website. It is listed in the co-op shop for $240.

Im extremely happy with the kit.

Although if i was to do it again I would grab one of the double reducer bokas and stick on a keg. Could do it all for around the same price but be able to do bigger volumes.

That is the configuration I am looking at. This will provide the flexibility of using it either as a pot still for stripping or running rums and bourbons, or in reflux mode. Good all rounder for a novice. And running it on a keg boiler for volume :) although finding a place to store the stuff is going to be fun :P
