Pot still RUM run - puking

Postby law-of-ohms » Thu Aug 16, 2012 4:03 pm

Gerneral question to anyone that experiances puking when running a strip with rum.

Any good tips tricks to stop / reduce it happening? I herd adding butter? or oil ?

Due to the masive volume of wash I go thru I simply can not run the still for 20hrs straight.

70L wash in my 90L boiler, running at ~ 10 to 15L strip per hour. 3" pot still setup....

Pot still RUM run - puking

I use either butter, olive oil or rice bran oil which will help but I have found on a full molasses wash I can only go a maximum 33 litres of wash in a 50 litre keg or I'll have puking issues. Running 70 litres of wash in your 90 litre boiler might be part of the issue

That's the shit I meant in my first post here :handgestures-thumbupleft:

It's pretty much the only cooking oil we use at home.

Any flavours in the product with butter? Just thinking because there is milk solids as well as fat?

Anyone noticed a change in flavour using olive oil or some other type of non-neutral, flavoured oil?

I don't notice any difference at all. Pretty sure it all stays in the boiler.

I dont think the oil gets hot enough to effect flavor, well I haven't noticed any difference between using it or not.

Well, I used ~200ml in a 40L wash.

Seems to work ok, still puked when I cranked the heat up

Maybe I shouldn't be trying to get 20L / hour output..... lol

Slightly off topic but maybe not.

I have only done two rum washes and the second is ready to be run through the still anytime now. These washes have been made using McStill's recipe to the T, however, I used the food grade refinery molasses bought from Southern Cross Supplies here in Sydney. These washes do not show any signs of a krausen whatsoever when fermenting and they do not puke.

If have no explanation as to why there would be a difference.

Could the puking be from carbon dioxide gas in the wash .
