My pot kit has arrived!

Postby Merlot » Mon Oct 08, 2012 4:10 pm

The kit I ordered arrived today :text-thankyoublue: looks great :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Thanks McStill. I was wondering do I need to pickle those brass connectors?

Cheers

You can pickle them if you want, or you can file the stopper out and push the copper right through so no brass is showing :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Glad you're happy.

Cheers.

My shitty air still tpw hearts... :))
I'm hoping this baby gonna give something to be proud of. Got about 60 L of dwwg just about ready :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Oh I was thinking it might be better to use flour paste at the boiler union to make it easier to disassemble... what do you think McStill?

Cheers

Okay I been thinking  the vapour is gonna reach any surface and if I file out the fittings the will still be a gap that the hot gas will reach. So maybe its a good idea to pickle anyway. As the 2in thread on the boiler will still be in the vapour path whether I file it out not so I will have to pickle that regularly anyway so I may as well just solder em as is. Does my thinking make sense?

Comments appreciated.... oh just got the brass to solder and she's finished :)

I reckon there's no need to pickle or worry about a tiny bit of brass in a still, there's a lot of scare mongering on other sites about it but you just do whatever you're comfortable with.

You can even tin the brass with soft solder to cover any exposed areas of concern, again I personally wouldnt bother ;-)

Cheers.

Agree with Mc here, I didn't bother with pickling, soldering or whatever.
Reckon the alcohol will see me off, well before lead poisoning from a tiny amount of brass in the vapour path.

Righto I think I'm ready to go for the cleaning runs hope to get at least the vinegar run done tomorrow. 50 50 vinegar water isn't it? Prolly run some of my over sugared dwwg for the alc run. What do ppl think would be the min charge in a 25 L boiler, 5 or 10L?

Also I have been thinking about scrubbers. If I shove some stainless steel scourers up the column maybe half a dozen or so, will I be getting close to 90 abv or what? I am gonna run it without scrubbers till I get used to my new baby though.
Appreciate any comments...
Cheers

I doubt you will get close to 90% unless you have a cooling coil even then in a pot I doubt its possible. look up the hybrid pot it has a cooling coil for reflux and wont reach 90%.

You got picks of the finished product? I am in the process of building a 3" pot, got the pipe today :D

I've had a big day. Went to the tip early and picked up a wheelie bin for $25!! came home cooked brekky for everyone, then went back into town and visited the feed store and found they had molasses for $1.10 per L but you gotta bring your own bucket! I will return and grab some of that.
Then I went to Bunnings and picked up some 1in tube and hose fittings to connect my little pool pump to the liebig, went grocery shopping and came home, helping a stranded BMW rider whose front brake had seized on the way. Got home and gave the wheelie bin a quick tub and sorted the pump connection. Hooked it up to the liebig, no leaks, you beauty.
Put my new baby together and charged the boiler with 6L water and about 1.5L vinegar and sparked her up for the cleaning run.
I didn't time it but there was steam coming out in about half an hour. I let that go for aboht 10 mins turned on the pump and it knocked it down straight away. Run it for another 20 or so mins checking all joins with my Mrs good mirror (she was at work :)) ),. All good  .... I was expecting leaks all over but no :handgestures-thumbupleft:
I want run the alc cleaning run tomorrow but I gotta go to mother in laws birthday lunch on tbne gold coast :angry-banghead:
Here's some pics
Also at the same time I was running a strip of dwwg through the air still.... who saysonly women can multi task :))

Cheers
