Anyone bored of 2" pot stills yet?

Postby blond.chap » Sun Nov 25, 2012 10:46 pm

Hi guys and girls,

Just put my Mcpot still together today, some pictures:

Putting Liebig together:

Why you never solder barefoot:

Assembled and on keg:

Close up on shoddy soldering:

First experience of molasses wash:

Next steps are:
- Fit tap on the keg (gotta find a good welder first)
- Buy 3 ring burner and HP regulator
- Cut up 44 gallon drum to use as shroud
- Cleaning runs (vinegar then junkahol)
- Fit sight glass/fill port on keg

Then look at a LM/VM packed column once I'm done.

Any suggestions are more than welcome.

We never get bored of potstills!!! :D , looking good mate, the soldering isn't shoddy at all, should see some of my bird shit :)) . Just remember the old saying, if there's solder at your feet you've got to much heat 8-) . Does that work well empty, heels? .That thing will serve you well :handgestures-thumbupleft: . You'll be pleasantly surprised what sort of rum you'll get out of it, good job.

Cheers

Yeah Googe, I often wear heels when soldering. I sometimes put on a pair of pants too.

Nothing worse than hot solder on your bits.

Lol, I don't wear shorts when soldering for that exact reason now. Couple of molten blobs of solder got a bit too close to the meat and 2 veg once :wtf: and that was it for me, pants on soldering from then on!

I was just looking at my soldering and the copper to stainless ferrule connection, and its no good. I can't get the bloody stuff to stick. Using a propane torch, bernzomatic plumbing solder and bernzomatic flux. I've been heating from the back of the ferrule as slowly as possible. I've tried cleaning it up as well as I can, but its stuck in place, so not great.

Any suggestions? I'm almost thinking I should just cut the thing off and make an easy flange

That's the easiest way, but if you get an aggressive flux and rough the surface of the SS you should get it no dramas :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Cheers, can you recommend a good flux? I haven't seen much of a range around.
