T500 pot still conversion

Postby SBB » Tue Jun 14, 2011 8:30 pm

Here are a few photos I took of the pot still I made to fit my T500 Boiler. Its well and truly run in after stripping 100 L of TPW. Im a bit worried that its a bit to fast to use for a spirit run as its putting out 1L in 15 mins @ 65% early in the run then slows as the ABV drops. From what Ive read this sounds way to fast...but ok for stripping.

That is cool as SBB. It's like an abstract mechanised Mr Squiggle. I like it a lot.

There's some really nice rigs being built by you lot lately, and this rig is no exception, using your imagination and building outside the box..... great work!

Now if you could work out how to control the heat that would make an excellent rum still, this rig really needs a keg and LPG burner.... ;)

Cheers.

MMMM! I like rum.......thats just the sort of thing I wanted to hear :D...............could I achieve the same thing with some sort of electrical controller?????......I think I know someone who can build me one if that is the case.

rectrikery is not my forte that's forsure, but I dont see why you couldnt fit a controller somehow.

If you can get controllers built here in oz you are one lucky fella, and if you could get him to build a few you could even make a few bob and help some other members here out "big time"

Well that should make for a nice change for you :|

Sbb i run my spirit runs at 4 l/h and i strip at 6 l/h so you should give it a whirl. Seems to me that you're just stripping slow rather than running to fast for a spirit run.

Best way to tell is to dip your finger throught the run and see if your tasting tails smearing. Also how steady she holds at the top of a run and how quick she dips. If you can hold on a spirit run up in the high seventies or low eighties for litre after litre without a slow anmd steady drop your onto a good thing.

Ill give a spirits run a crack 5Star ....but I still have my doubts. As for the pelican shape  I was trying to keep the weight of the whole affair fairly central as those boiler lids are kinda flimsy.

How did you get on with this SBB? Did you go down the power controller route?

Here is my T500 boiler with my strip head on it - hence the over-sized condenser - normally used on a bigger keg boiler.
I can use this as a pot and have done, using a phase angle controller, and a power meter (for repeatable results).
I have also used this head on this boiler with a gin basket with good results.

G'day Al
To date Ive only used it for stripping. I ended up building a bigger pot still in 2.5 inch using a gas fired 50L beer keg for a boiler....I tend to use the bigger one more. I still use the T500 pot for stripping 25 litre washes from time to time. I never really pursued the power controller idea due to building the bigger pot still. I may still do so in the future as it would be handy for doing smaller experimental batches.
I recognize your still from another forum that Ive often looked at but never joined.

Hi might seem like a stupid question but as I'm new to this I'll ask. With this type of setup you are able to run some flavours through with whatever wash you use but are you also able to run neutral spirits through this. Also for a 25l wash roughly how long does it take per stripping run as compared to a spirit run. And last but not least how would you read temperatures in this setup
Cheers nd
