4" Pot Still

Pot still design and discussion

4" Pot Still

Postby adam89 » Sat Jul 13, 2013 12:42 pm

So I'm planning on undertaking a build. I was thinking that I'd attempt something simpler than a bubbler to start with but also something that can be upgraded later.

4" Pot still with 2" shotgun, something resembling Candy.

700mm 4" column (leaves a bit to play with for an RC later)
4" 90° bend
4"-2" reducer
2" Tri clamp union
2" 90° bend
2" Tri clamp union
650mm 2" shotgun (what I have left from making my element guards)
4 or 5 1/2" pipe for internal shotgun, what ever I can fit
All soft soldered.

I've noticed that people generally use 2.5" for shotguns with a 4" column size. Do you think that the 2" will suffice?

I'm thinking that this shouldn't take too long to build once I pick up my materials and give me good practice at copper soldering. It should also be quicker than my current 2" pot.

Cheers.

The 2 inch on my FSD rig runs fine, even stripping in pot mode it knocks down a shit load!

Yeah, 2" will be fine. You can squeeze 5 1/2" pipes in 2".

If you're going to build a shotgun condenser make it so you know it'll never be run at it's limit, for a 4" dedicated stripping still I'd look at possibly going larger & longer with more tubes so you can really crank that burner up :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Mac,

I was thinking that the 4" pot still could replace my 2" for stripping and spirit runs. I was also hoping that it could be converted into a bubbler at some time in the future.

If you say bigger would be preferable, I might have to look at going for a 3" shotgun. I had a quick play around with dimensions and think that I'd be able to fit 9x 1/2" tubes into 3" with still enough flow for water.

Now do I go 4" bend, 4"x2" reducer, 2" bend, 2"x3" reducer, shotgun.
or
4" bend, 4"x3" reducer, 3" bend, shotgun.
Decisions. I guess I'll just see what they have in stock.

Thanks for putting this up Adam. I am thinking the same thing. I am gonna make a 4" pot still and use that while I am building my bubbler, then I will reuse the reducer and product condenser for my bubbler.

:text-+1: Would a keg with two 2400 elements be enough to run it?

So i visited Reece Plumbing this afternoon and didn't get ripped off. The guy was decent and gave us a good cash trade price. I picked up some gear to get me started on a few things. I've got to visit my plumber mate and borrow his 3" & 4" expander. And because we all love pictures of copper, here is what I picked up.
