Kingys pot still build

Postby kingy » Thu Aug 15, 2013 5:03 pm

So my 2inch pot still just ain't cutting it anymore, need something with more balls and something so I can have my burner cranking instead of at the lowest revs she has.

So I'm going to build a 4inch pot still so I can continue on making rum-whiskey and bourbon at a faster rate with less time involved.

Also to see if I want to build a copper neutral maker for liquers with some parts from my 2inch or just get 5star bubbler.

You sound exactly like me mate. My plan was to build a 4" pot still but make it modular, that way I could build it up to bubbler over time. First thing I built was a shotgun condenser, then I made a 4" column and a 2" to 4" reducer with easy flanges. Then you just need a couple of elbows and away you go.

What out put u guys getting on ya 2"
Im running a 2" to a 8 meter 3/4" copper worm in a 50 litre bucket with water inlet and out and on a 50ltr keg and my stripping runs are a easy 5-6ltr a hour if not more and i can crank my 3 burner ( bottom of the keg glow red) hot and knock down every thing no problems at all but on the sprit run it is a bit slower may b 3 litres a hour
In saying that would love 4" just for shots and giggles :music-deathmetal:

My 2" strips at about 7.5 L per hour. I do my spirit runs at 2-2.5Lph.

How many watts are you guys running that you need a 4" pot still? I'm running a 2" with a 5@3/8" shotgun and It knocks down all 6000w without blinking.

For me its not so much about stripping, a 2" column will produce at about 2.5LPH on a spirit run, a 4" column should be able to run at more than double that. 6 LPH spirit runs make things a bit quicker. I will be able to answer this better in a couple of months when I have had a chance to run mine.

After reading how much you guys collect an hour maybe I should upgrade my condenser first while I wait for some 4 inch to turn up at work.

My last spirit run with 40 odd litres of low wines(rum) I collected 34 stubbies at around 15-20mins each, run took around 10-11hours. Before I cranked it up for the tails.

Maybe I should be running my spirit run a bit faster.

Still want an extra 2inches tho lol

Wow thats long dude
and for 40 litres at say 36% you should have got more than that i would have thought
and 10 hours hell your take of rate is a litre a hours to be honest my last run i only had may b 30 litres and i had 10 litres in 3 and a bit hours because i run a worm it is hard to get a drip drip but i get a nice small stream the size of a tooth pick

may b a new condenser will make all the world to ya

I don't think you will need to upgrade your condensor for your 2" rig. If it can handle 3-4lph on a strip run then it should have no worries on a spirit run. Have you tried adding a bit more heat during your spirit runs. A 2" column should be able to produce 2Lph on a spirit run.

I have it down as low as my burner goes so its dripping out the parrot might increase the collection to 10mins a stubby on the next run.

Also do you think a shotgun on the 4inch is a good idea if I'm gunna be using it for spirit runs as well?

Finally got some 4inch and it cost zilch. :))
Been thinking, can I reduce the 4inch to 2inch before the bend or do I need a 4inch 90degree then reduce it.

My pot is about the same as you are planning, except mine is 3" not 4". I used a 3" elbow, then a 3"-2" reducer, but there's no reason (that I can see) why you couldn't go reducer first, then elbow...I've seen pics of both ways.

:text-imwithstupid: I think any difference between having the reducer before or after the bend would be negligible.

And reducer first would be cheaper, especially with 4"...

A little update on my thoughts are
700 mm 4 inch to 4"-2" reducer to a 2x2"90 bends.
A little unsure on the Liebig.
Would a 1 1/2" inside 2" be ok say 1200mm long?

Also
For mounting to the keg what is the strongest way of mounting. Coz damn 4"piping is heavy lol.
