Shotgun condenser question

Postby twobottles » Thu Sep 12, 2013 5:58 pm

Do you think it is possible to build a shotgun that will work well enough with 4, 1/2" tubes 540mm long inside 2"?

equipment: 50 mm pure distilling reflux still, extension with extra scrubbies, now triclamped to a 50l keg with a triple ring gas burner. 2" modular shottie pot still!

Yep, mine's 400mm with 4*1/2in inner pipes. Works fine for at least 4.8kW.

Sweet, this will enable me to make a 1" over 3/4" liebig, overkill I know, ive read that this will be less efficient also than 3/4" over 1/2". Would you have a rough guess as to the flow required in liters per hour?

For the shotgun around 2L/minute will do the trick. Not sure for a liebig sorry, I've never measured flow on one.

Sorting cooling out will have to be my next project, that seems like quite a flow. I picked up a 200l drum from an orchard, it had calcium in it previously, Ive had it full of water a few times and washed it out have been thinking it would make a good fermenter but I'll use it for the tank I think.

So my 600mm long 2" shotty with 7x 3/8" down the guts should work, then?

not at the same time.

I got three pieces of copper from this guy about 1m of 1", 1m of 3/4" and 2.2m of 1/2", they happened to be the pieces that the guy had in his scrap bin.

I originally was going to make a 3/4" over 1/2" liebig but if I make the larger 1" I can use the 1/2" as the inner tubes for the shotgun at 540 it would seem.

This would make the best use of what I have I think.

Yep, I made mine about 550 with 7 x 3/8 and it smashed down 4.8kw no worries.

Did you go to much effort bashing the pipes up to create turbulence?

The 3/8 I used was soft drawn so it came on a roll, by the time I 'straightened' it out it was pretty wonky so I just used it like that.

So it's better to have the pipes 'wonky' than straight? I knew it! Tried telling my uncle, he was adamant that I had to get them all gun barrel straight!

Why don't you save the 1" and 3/4" for a shotgun RC, bubble caps and downcomers for a bubbler? Once you've got a shotgun PC you'll have no need for a liebig.

equipment: Eve - 4" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (sieve plates), 330 mm packed section on a keg boiler with 2 x 2000 W elements.
Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

Well I did have a list of reasons, impatience and just that ive been thinking about making a liebig for while, and that not making a liebig snowballs into other things I will need to make, extra triclamps, blah blah blah.

But I had a good think about it and if I scrap my parrot ill have the bits I need and just need to think about a couple of other minor issues.

Its a really good idea so I gave being impatient a miss and started on the shotgun.

Some pics

Cut a section of 50mm and flattened it, drew the two end discs.

Drilled 12mm holes (largest bit I have....) then finished off with a chainsaw file.

Almost done. Hopefully get the chance to finish it tonight.

So next up is soldering the water inlet and outlet. I havnt used these fittings before so any suggestions are welcome on finishing it off. I brazed the end discs so that I woulnt get any issues when soft soldering the tubes and flange ring, was wondering whether to braze the water pipes as well.

Took a week to get the time but finished it just before midnight last night. Boiled up some left over backset and it worked beautifully, im giving if a final clean before running some heads and tails through it.
