Alembic Problem

Postby Brigand » Sun Jul 31, 2011 12:30 am

Hi fellas

I've just received a 5 L alembic pot still for my birthday

And any way I was playing with it and the top has become stuck in the boiler and I can't seem to be able to pull it apart

I've tried brute force, boiling water, cold water etc and no dice!

Anyone have any thoughts? Also in the event I do get it apart any ideas to stop it happening again. Lube maybe?

Cheers

Resolved!!!

I managed to get some water in through the neck and put the still on the stove

I then applied some oil to the join the the edge of a spatula and the oil seemed to be drawn in

I the knocked up a jig in the garage with g clamps and timber and finally managed to separate the parts

I did slip once a made a small ding but have been able to hammer it out

I may line the joint with flour paste first or maybe some ptfe tape

I'll get some piccies sorted soon

Cheers

I always admire these alembic stills, I'd love a 100L model sitting out in the shed to play with :D

As the old pictures have disappeared I've attached some pictures of the vinegar and alcohol cleaning runs I did today

Gonna be making some gin extract per Zymurgy Bob's recipe out of his book in the near future once I source juniper berries etc

Anyone know how fast you should run these alembics for spirit runs and extract runs as in Zymurgy Bob's recipe?

Cheers

Edit: Also I made a flour water dough to seal the alembic - this was much easier than I expected and it just peals off when you are finished
