Distill heads and tails to neutral?

Postby alchz » Tue Aug 12, 2014 8:59 pm

Hi all,

I did a search and could not really find any information.
I have a large amount probably 20-30 liters of heads and tails from both rum and whisky runs.
If I run them back through the pot still another 3-4 times will it give me a near neutral spirit?
Dont have access to a reflux.

Cheers

Hi.. there is a discussion going on at the moment titled 'feints! What do you do with them' or something like that.

But... you will never get a neutral from a pot. You may get a passable close ish vodka from a triple distilled tpw but if you're using whiskey heads and tails it will not clean up enough no matter how many times you run it.

What to do with it you say? Do a feints run and keep it as whiskey.. just heads and tails ideally diluted to 40% with wash.

If your set on running it as neutral try not to add too much tails if any, this is where a lot of the flavours are.

For neutral from a pot you would need to start with a neutral wash (TPW, WBW etc.) Strip it, spirit run it and run it again.. this is nowhere near as good as neutral from a still that has reflux abilities but it's not a bad thing because thats what it's designed to do - pull flavour through.

Not all bad news though, if you're going to add flavours to the 'neutral' like limoncello, strawberry panty droper, espresso etc all those flavours that came through will be masked and you'll be golden.

Are the rum amd whiskey feints mixed together? If so you need a reflux.. rhiskey is not very nice.. trust me on this. :puke-huge:

I was pleasantly surprised to find the 5 plate plus packed section did an exceptional job on the rum feints. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

- They are still all in separated so i might just keep them that way.

If they are still separate have you considered doing a feints run?

Just run them each through again and do good cuts and you will produce some more good rum and whisky.

The heads and tails from each of these runs will be more compressed and probably never going to get any better. You might as well use the heads as either fuel or mortein (as posted recently in another thread) and you can add the tails to your next similar washes.

Just how I would do it given your current equipment, others may disagree.

Cheers,

Richard
