I think most just use a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water.

Try this

Through the pot still?
Be aware, you're going to get a lot of blokes coming along saying neutral through the pot still is a waste of time very soon

You will get much better results with a flavored wash through a pot still :handgestures-thumbupleft: Cereal based washes are a good starting point all though most of the recipes in the Tried and proven are very easy to follow. What do you like/normally buy?
Zacs cornflakes whiskey produces a bourbon styled drink, the weetbix wash through a pot should give you a subtle wheat whiskey.
My personal Fave is Mac's MacWhiskey. No-one only makes one of those :laughing-rolling:
Then you have the BWKO and Rums that most of the experienced guy always do.
Enjoy
Reflux definitely for a neutral. Its reported that using a low wines charge through a reflux head produces outstanding results.

You will get flavor carry over from the wash itself then oak for a period. Have a search for oaking there is plenty of information on here :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I made a adaptor to put the reflux on the keg boiler as this was my first option before i built the pot still

I have already put 3 demis down full of 40% 1 on whisky chips from hbs and a jd and wild turkey barrel chips from hbs as well
the jd and wild turkey are over a month old and are really smooth and yummy

You may find at 40% it ends up quite woody flavoured, it is ideal to age between 60 and 65% most going for either 65 or 62.5 :handgestures-thumbupleft:
