Righto help required to save brain

Postby Distilledsnow » Thu Apr 28, 2016 1:21 pm

This is simple enough I think,
I want to make a pot still as I am sick of chasing my tail with my chinese ebay still.
I just want an easy cheap one. This is not a matter of much more then I like a drink and just want to build a still cheap that won't kill me or anyone else
I have managed to collect a 50 l keg. I have looked on 5 star nice and all but more then I want to outlay straight up.
I found this
image.jpg

I just want to make something like this, from bits I can get (from where ever I don't know ideas appreciated) that I can do my first soft solder job on.
I am majorly isolated where I live and only have access to Reece( a while a way), which ask for a child in advance for a meter of pipe
I have searched and searched and have stayed up all night trying to work this out.
Does anyone have a shopping list or ideas that I can use to just make a plain old still, I'm Even happy for it to run a plain old worm to make it easier.
Yours in need

well that one has brass so forget it

you could do something similar with

column
250mm of 2"
2" 90 degree bend
2"-1" reducer
in between the bend and reducer make it easy flange
1" 90 degree bend
condenser
3/4" pipe
1/2" pipe
1"-1/2" reducer
1" * 3/4" * 3/4" tee if they make these
1" * 3/4" * 1/2" tee if they make these

some 1/4" for easy flanges
2 tri clamps
2 seals

and no brass

EDIT, mine is close to hilz... but in hilz i would put a flange where the 54mm couplar is so you can rotate and set collection height. a couplar will cost about as much as a tri clamp. also easy flange on the bottom of column so you can connect to a keg

if it was me i would go to tradelink for fittings scrapyard for pipes but if you dont have a scrap yard then i would say tradelink or Reece. tradelink has been better in brissy. bunnings has 3/4" and 1/2" pipe but nothing bigger

Do Reece keep all this on hand, mine isn't that helpful. At all and charge a lot, what would I expect to pay for 2" and the reducer to 3/4 because I can see there computer, they up the price I reckon if your not a known local

I have aiece of 2" staino pipe that that be incorporated, it is about 50cm long, looks like it needs a clean up in and out that's all, can I soft solder a plate to the bottom or something to make a flange for a tri lover fitting to hold it to the keg, guess next step is what happens after the pipe.
Be gentle I am really new to this construction thing it is way not in my usual thing

Unless you have a tig or a good mate who does it would be much easier to work only in copper.
If you are going to solder triclover ferrules to your column you will need a copper joiner/coupler as the pipe and ferrule diameter are the same.

2" can be had from fleabay but you don't really need it. If you want as cheap as possible use some flat pack copper pipe. A length of 3/4 or even inch (could probably get away with 1/2" even) malleable copper, a cheap staino bulkhead fitting with compression nut in appropriate size and a big bucket you can sacrifice for the worm. Attach your copper to the lid of the boiler using the bulkhead fitting and some silicone sealant (you'll need to ensure adequate headroom in the boiler when you fill it) go straight up and around, carefully bend a nice worm (3/4 or 1" love to kink if you Bend too tight), install worm in the bucket (or old rubbish bin) and bingo. Figure out some kind of water system for the bucket and done. Not fancy but at least I didn't recommend using flour paste to seal it. :))

Here's a pick of a bulkhead compression fitting. They basically fit through a hole and have a nut to secure it either side of the hole. Pipe goes in and you secure it by tightening the top nut tight. Comes apart for dismantling but can only use the olives (bits that bite into pipe) once on a single piece of pipe. The one pictured is about $20 but is a swagelok and is on the pricier end of the spectrum. You can find cheaper on eBay. You may need to rig up a 2" triclamp blank to drill out on the middle of your still instead of a cap as I don't know how you could easily install one otherwise on a keg with only a 2" access port.
I use them where I can and you'll see a few on my 2" still for elbows and connectors. Only because I can get them for next to nix though and it makes it fully modular as opposed to soldering which makes it fixed.
Too late now (dark outside) but I could have a hunt through my stuff to see if I have one if you want to go down that path.

Thank you for the replies.
Pm are out there
I will look further into the bulk head,
Does the end of the copper pipe need to be flanged

Looking at your first pic, I thought of a pressure cooker pot; should be able to find them @ garage sales, second hand sops, St Vinnies....

Take the central 'vent' off and put your pot still on that. Locks in secure, seals and usually has a spot where you can thread a thermometer ferule in place ...
